Customs Problems--Argentina
Customs officials here in Mendoza have impounded my KLR, have had it about 2 weeks, and show no sign of movement on it. They´re supposedly waiting on confirmation from points south that I in fact entered the country(my papers were lost/stolen last January near Rio Gallegos).
Any suggestions on getting movement out of them? I talked to US embassy 2 days ago, they said they´d look into it and get back to me later that day. Acted like they couldn´t be bothered. It´s getting ridiculous and I´m eager to be on my way. Any help appreciated.--Porter porter_watson@hotmail.com |
Did you get a police report in Rio Gallegos? YOU need to come up with proof that the theft happened, and that you did enter legally.
If you have no proof of the theft, or didn't report it, you'll just have to wait till they get it sorted - if they can or do. Not sure of anything else that can be done in this situation. It might be a time to resort to some "per$uasion" - but I wouldn't until I was desperate - would be fine in some countries, but Argentina is cracking down on corruption, so you may end up in jail instead. Just ask if there is a fine you can pay, since you did enter legally, but neglected to notify the police of the theft cause you're an ignorant tourist etc... Good luck! Note to all - pay attention to the problem and CORRECT solution here! You must report a theft of documents or the bike, or you may not be able to leave the country. Them's the rules... Scanning all documents and posting them in your webmail is a VERY good idea too. ------------------ Grant Johnson Seek, and ye shall find. ------------------------ One world, Two wheels. www.HorizonsUnlimited.com |

I can´t help you in Mendoza, but if it happens again, just go to an internet cafe and make your own papers what about look like the original ones, get a stamp made somewhere and sign the new papers yourself!
Igot mine stolen in 2002 in Mexico and i am still travelling in southamerica with my faith papers. No one ever recognised that! Good luck, Albert! |
