Driving to Ushuaia in the Winter?

Does anybody have any experience / advice / general thoughts on the feasibility of travelling from Peru to Ushuaia in July / early August?

I would be on a KLR650.

Thanks a lot!

It's cold in Ushuaia in the summer.....

Expect snow, ice, closed campsites and hardly any tourists.

I can't expect it to be enjoyable riding..

But then again, I hate the cold...

Cold, but not as cold as a continental climate would be. Damp, with snow at sea level and periodic short road closures. Ridiculously short days, too, and loooooonnng nights. The main problem is that the weather is so variable that you won't know what to expect long in advance--will it be 0 degrees, or -10? Windy or still? Snowing like crazy (as it did briefly during summer when I was there, too) or sunny and crisp?

I wouldn't ride a bike there in winter, but if you're determined to see it you could always take a bus or plane. But I'm not sure that's worth doing: Ushuaia's pretty, but not pretty enough to justify a long haul down there on potentially icy roads in freezing weather. Without the hiking in the mountains and the opportunity for Antarctic cruises, what would you do there? Skiing's better elsewhere--without spending a week getting there.

Others have asked this question before, and you can probably find answers to all your questions by using the search function.

Hope that's helpful.
