FS: Honda XRE 300 Peru
 
I have a Honda XRE300 that is a Mexican motorcycle. I'm an American. I'm the second owner. It currently has about 31,000 km. Has bag rack, upper chassis protector, and protector that sits under the engine. Also has a 58 L GIVI top case. Will be looking to sell in March/April. If I don't find buyer at the right price I'll just drive it back to Mexico.

Having said this, I do not understand the selling/buying process very well in SA. And obviously every country is different. So we will need to figure that out.

Top-line advice: ride back to Mexico and sell the bike. Less hassle and a longer trip if you have the time and funds. You won't regret the extended experience, and you'll have the chance to take a different route back through CA. Otherwise, the road looks different headed in the opposite direction, and you have experience with each country. It will be fun.

Someone else may correct me and hopefully will expand on my comments. I'm not a Peruvian lawyer, just a rider who has heard stories and bought/sold two bikes in Peru (with local expert help!) Here are the basics as I understand them.

You will need to have a "poder" prepared if selling the bike outside of Mexico. The document will allow the person to legally ride the bike in and out of Peru. A poder does not transfer ownership. I think a notary can prepare a poder, but there could easily be steps that require going to a government office if transferring ownership.

1) Ownership can be transferred by registering the bike in a country (such as Peru), assuming the person plans to keep the bike in Peru. You or the new owner will need to pay the importation duties and probably other legal steps. The importation cost may add significantly to the total sale cost and make the deal impractical, but not always. More research is advised.

By selling the bike, you will be competing with the local resale market. Explore the Facebook market for listings to get an idea of what you might get. There are used car and motorcycle websites in the country where you end up trying to sell the bike. I have been told Peruvians won't pay top dollar for a used bike with what they consider high mileage. +30k KM probably qualifies for high mileage to a Peruvian.

I have purchased and sold two bikes in Peru through an outfitter...he facilitates the purchase, reconditioning, and sales of motorcycles for adventure riders and more. I am not sure if he is interested in facilitating a Mexican-plated bike. If you decide to ship the bike, I know a guy in Lima. Send me a PM, and I'll connect you.

2) With a poder, the new owner could ride back to Mexico and transfer the bike ownership. How that would work without your being present in Mexico or if you can authorize someone in Mexico to sell the bike is unknown to me.

NOTE: Some countries aren't happy if you take a motorcycle out of the country and never bring it back. For example, Peru will impose a fine for every day over ~1 year that the bike has been out of Peru. I don't know the details, but I have heard there is such a law in Peru. Does Mexico have the same law? I don't know. Are you planning on ever going back to Mexico?

I rode an XRE300 for 30K KM across six SA countries in 2023. It's a fun bike. I hope you are enjoying your trip, and good luck with the sales. I sold my XRE to a Canadian who stores the bike in Peru and will be riding SA from there.
