G/box sprocket in chile
Bit of help needed please, after some enthusiasic riding on the Paso agua negra I have lost 3 teeth of the gearbox sprocket on my Yamaha XT600E 2003 model, we have been stuck in La Serena for a week trying to get one, mission impossible!!!
We have decided to head north to Antofagasta to try our luck there, Does anybody know of a place there where I may get one? Thanks in advance Pete |
Why not go the other way and talk to Paul from Motolatam in Santiago, he was very helpful with all my repairs and a few others as well while I was there, very experienced as well.
I can find some more details if I look hard enough Cheers TS |
Should be able to make your own or get a local metal shop to make one up for you.
All you need is sheet steel of the same thickness, lathe it round, drill holes for the teeth, cut splines for the shaft then heat treat it to get it nice and hard. Seriously, a metal shop should have no problem custom making it for you. |
Thanks but
We have phoned lots of dealers in Santiago, none of which have the part,as we are heading north,, I don,t really wan,t to backtrack 500km,
I am a mechanic and the rest of the sprocket is in good condition, I just seemed to have been unlucky and got a rock thrown up which got caught between the chain and Sprocket. There are bike dealers in Antifagasto who may be able to help and I am hoping with a bit of careful riding we will make it to there. Making one is not really an option, but at a pinch I could buy any 15 tooth sprocket cut a square hole in it, cut mine square and weld the 2 together. Still its an option, Thanks Pete I,ve just had an Idea, I,ve searched the comunity on horizons and there is a member here in La Serena, so I,ve just sent him or her a message, fingers crossed, should of done this before, we,ve used the comunity a lot on our RTW |
Can't you get new teeth welded on, (ie the metal to make new teeth) may not be perfect but a hour or so with a file could get you on the road again. ( maybe use castalan eutectic rods) the material wears well.
Oddly enough, I have just changed the sprocket on my Enfield. Not an easy task, needed three special pullers, a locking tool and 14, 18, 24, 30, 32 and 50mm spanners :( At least the exercise allowed me to slightly retard the ignition so now she is running as near perfect as you could wish. |
Problem solved
Met a guy last night who has found a sprocket for us in Santiago and his father in law is dropping it off for us on Monday here in La Serena
