Where to start? We just got off the Amazonas and are in Porto Velho. Yes, start in Belem. We had many problems/adventures. Where to start?
1st- understand they will all lie to you, especially about the schedule. Our trip from Belem to Manous was to take 5 days, but took 8 (including leaving a day late). We were on the Lobo Ferroz. 2nd- negotiate a lot on the price 3rd- get to know your captain and crew and get a good feeling before you pay 4th- do not pay more than 1/2 until you are actually leaving- the money in your pocket is the only leverage you have when they start jerking you around. They will jerk you around. 5th- Manous is a pit. Guard your stuff. The boat will be swarmed with theives the instant it hits the dock. The dock in Manous is very low compared to the ground and it is very difficult or sometimes impossible to get your bike from one boat to another without a small canoe boat in between. The canoes are scary but they work. We got pressured in Manous into getting on a bad boat (the JC- stay away from the JC) by the fast talking guys who came aboard. Take your time- dont be pressured into moiving your bike or paying anyone and remeber they will lie about the schedule and what boats are leaving and when. They ALL lie! 6th- you CAN ride from Manous to Porto Velho on the Transamazonicas if you have some Cajones. Everyone in Manous said we could not, but we met some guys in Porto Velho who just recently did it. 300km max distance between gas, some water crossings. Good Luck! |

Hi Ohad.
Seems like we're going the same way. I'm in Sao Paulo now and riding north. I will also try to ship my bike from Manaus too Yurimaguas, Peru, from where I will make my way to Ecuador. Let me hear from you, maybe we should hook up. Daniel |
