Is the TVIP for Argentina a physical document
 

Hi All! First time poster, longtime lurker.

I've just started my little SA tour and just crossed Uruguay to Argentina at fray Bentos crossing. I handed my passport and registration and the border check lasted only a couple of minutes so I was pleased with that.

However, when I checked my passsport when i arrived at my first stop that evening I didn't see any stamp in the passport.

And now as I'm reading other threads about the TVIP I noticed that many mentioned that you 'have to hand it back when you leave Argentina'

I wasn't given any paper or anything. The nice lady just handed my passport/reg back and said 'have a nice day'

Am i going to get in trouble when I try to exit the country? Or is everything automatic now?

PS I don't need the 8 month extension, I will be out within 3 months.

I guess that means you are in a bit of trouble….

Yes the TVIP/TIP is a physical document that you get at Aduana (Customs) when you enter a country - and your supposed to hand it back when you exit the country at Aduana again.

If I were you I would probably go straight back to the border you crossed at and tell them what happend… and hopefully you get it sorted.

That’s happened before, and to the best of my knowledge all involved have survived. Best take it seriously, however—deal with it and don’t make the same mistake again.

Go back to the border.

Migration for Argentina doesnt stamp your passport anymore (I think they stopped doing this a few years ago).



Customs (Aduana) issues a paper TVIP. And you will be in trouble leaving Argentina if you dont have one. Go back to the border and talk to the aduana, as also Snakeboy and Markharf suggested.

Hi there. Thanks for the info. And thanks for jogging my memory. I did actually pass by the Aduana, got off and went in his little office, but he also just waved me along and said I didn't need to stop.

Looks like I should have insisted!

If your motorcycle is not registered in Argentina, you will need a TVIP (temporary vehicle import permit) to operate your motorcycle legally in Argentina.
Without a legal TVIP that authorizes your motorcycle to operate in Argentina for a period of 3 months or 8 months, you will not be operating your motorcycle legally in Argentina and your insurance is null and void.
You might also risk confiscation of your motorcycle if, during a traffic stop it is discovered you do not have a valid TVIP and thus no valid insurance.

Relax, you can handle this and Argentine Customs wants to handle this asap. Return to the border, Customs will be more than happy to issue you a TVIP if you very politely explain the situation. The important thing to remember is try not to cast blame on the officials. Just apologize, show your passport and ask for help. (your entry is noted in the computers even though there is no stamp in the passport).

Ride carefully, you will be fine. The take away here is be friendly, polite and do not blame anyone. You will be O K. let us know how it works out.

If i was to ship my motorcycle in from Malaysia, so I will be getting the TVP from the port custom? Or is the process different? Thank you.

Joko, No carnet de passage needed for Argentina. You will be issued a TVIP by customs at the port of entry. You can ask for an 8 month TVIP instead of the standard 3 month TVIP and probably get it.

Not sure, but you might have to scurry downtown to buy insurance if you don't have insurance for Argentina. Sometimes Customs asks for proof of insurance sometimes not. Not sure, but ATM insurance might be available on-line.

CdP is not needed, as noted, however if you prefer you can enter on a CdP, which is what we've always done.

IF you already HAVE a Carnet, because you're coming from an area where you need it, go ahead and use it, but absolutely do not get one just for the Americas, not worth it and not needed.

In Argentina, your own entry is managed by Migraciones, and from some time now they don't stamp passports anymore, you have a ticket in their system, if you want to download it. It’s good to check and avoid overstaying the 90 days visa they gave you, and don't pay a fine for it.. And it will help to probe Customs where and when you have entry to Argentina. https://www.migraciones.gov.ar/transitos/

Regarding TVIPs, if your bike is extra-Mercosur, Aduana should must issued it, and if they didn't maybe it was because they didn't realise that your bike wasn't a Mercosur registered one…

So, the 1st & 2nd question should be: Where is your bike registered? And what's your plan after the 90 days?

If your bike is from a neighbouring country, don't worry too much!

Hey all. Just to update:
My bike was bought and registered in Uruguay so as javkap suggested, it was no biggie when i went back to the Aduana. But still nice to have closure!
