Leaving the bike behind in Brazil?
 

We will soon take a break from our RTW trip and fly from Rio to elsewhere.

The plan is to stow away or sell the Chilean registered bike.

Will we run into troubles when entering the country with our motorbikes and flying out without them? I assume the bikes are entered into the system when entering the country.
When leaving customs might ask where the bikes left.

Has anyone done this before?

Yes they told me i would get problems so i left the country to sell the bike elsewere and came back using the bus. My bike got registered in the computer when i entered Brasil coming from Venezuela:

Which time to you want to sell the bike? Im looking for a cheap 125cc bike in Brasil but have not planed anything yet...

No problem leaving a bike in brazil. They do not issue TIPs. So there is no record of it entering nor leaving. I know as I had left a bike there for over 6 months with no hassels. It is also a great place to change ownership.

I will get there with two 200cc adventure bikes by the end of February. They are 3 months old only and the plan is to sell them for about 400.- Euro each.

When you enter by road your mode of transport is to be entered on the tourist entry slip. Whether that means it is in the computer as well is not known.

I am in Manaus now having entered Brasil from Uruguay Jan 2014. I left the bike in Belem in March 2014 and flew back to Canada. Picked the bike up Jan 9 this year. There were no problems for me in any way. There is NO paperwork for tourist bikes here.

Great trip up the Amazon by boat. Venezuela next week.

Here is my experience in full.

I entered Brasil from Uruguay in Jan. 2014, crossing at Chui. I specifically asked at the Policia Federal, speaking with a spanish speaking officer, and later with an English speaking officer about any required paperwork for my bike. Both said none was needed and I was free to leave the country without it.

Travelling northwards along the coast, through São Paulo inland to Mina Gerais, back to the coast, detoured to Chapada Diamantina. There I met a very nice Brasilian and his wife also touring by motorcycle from Belem. They suggested a route to Belem (my original destination). Later I visited them and ended up leaving my bike, a 2009 BMW with them in March 2014. I flew back to Canada returning Jan 10, 2015. I serviced my bike, took a boat to Manaus and onward North towards Venezuela. Feb 2 (yesterday) I crossed into Venezuela, leaving Brasil with no questions or remarks about the bike, my papers or passport. I entered Venezuela without remarks regarding my exit paperwork from Brasil.

That is a full story. I have left my bike in SA 4 years and returned tin January to ride for 3 months. Once illegally in Ecuador, twice legally with Willis Motos in Urugauay and lastly in Brasil. Now I am heading to Cartehena and back north in Central America. Buena suerte.
