Look for 2 motorbikes in SA beginning of 2015

My wife and me plan to travel Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru in the first 3-4 months of 2015.

We can't ship our own bikes as we are already traveling Asia .....

Please help us with your advice.

How can we possibly arrange two bikes in SA to travel those countries?
Our understanding is to get a bike registered on the own name in Chile will take ages.

Thx for your advice.

Hi Wauschi,

Two mates and I are planning to do the exact same thing, and have also read about all the issues that buying a bike in Chile presents.

Haven't found a concrete solution yet, but if I do I'll let you know - please do the same!

Cheers,
Klaus

Wauschi,

In Peru it is no problem! All you have to do is go to immigrations (as a tourist) and ask for a 'permission to sign contracts'. The cost is
$6 and takes about a hour. Then you can sign a motorcycle purchase agreement and it can be in your own name!

The license plate remains the same and you can ride on the original persons SOAT insurance until it expires, but the title gets switched to your name. This process takes 15 'dias abiles' which means days in which the government offices are open... so baring holidays it is about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. Meanwhile (if the past owner allows it), you can circulate (WITHIN PERU) on HIS title until yours comes out.

I do this for HUBB and ADVRider people. I purchase motorcycles ahead of time for them in MY name (as I live in Peru), then when they arrive we do the transfer (cost of about $70) to their name, but they can take off riding and then I send them the paperwork IN THEIR NAME to the city in Peru of their choice before they cross the border to another country.

NOTE: Peruvian registered motorcycles CANNOT directly enter Bolivia as there is no TVIP agreement between the countries! You must first enter Chile or Brazil and THEN you can enter Bolivia from there.

Let me know if you'd like my help in this. I can give you references of those I have already done this for.

Cheers! Toby

My wife and I are currently in Bolivia, riding down to Ushuaia and back up to Buenos Aires on 2 DRs 650. We are planning on selling our bikes in BA around the end of December 2014. They are both plated in California.
While we haven't done extended research on the topic, it is our understanding that the ownership of the bikes can be changed with the Aduana. The new owner taking the responsibility of getting the vehicles out of the country within the timeframe set by the original temporary import permit.

Provided this is verified, our bikes could be a good option for you

Actually it HAS been done, tho not sure of legality...

You must change the registration/title (or make a new one) into the new name... then you MUST ride to a border together. The original owner must exit the country on the present TVIP and old papers, then switch drivers and enter the new country on the new papers.

Contact SamericaXplorer in Miami. (samericaxplorer.net)

They are offering (2) well equipped KLR for a fixed fee. and do a ride with them. They are open to any country in S.A. but mainly Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina.

The bikes to be placed in Chile upon arrangement for the time needed. I know the cost is pretty good for 1-2 month ride.
