I'd be curious as to how the bikes held up. AKT bikes are rebadged Chinese bikes, and if set up properly, and backed by AKT, should be ok bikes for tooling around Columbia, and for $1350 US could be given to someone for parts after you are done. Kaiser, perhaps you could carry these "throw-away" bikes for those not doing grand tours?

Also the bikes are registered in our names and we have all of the paperwork in our names too, including the registration documents which she told us to have laminated. The kind woman helping me said we were good to go but when I asked her if my friend will get in trouble for not having an international drivers license she ran outside and asked a policeman what we need and he said we need to take our Australian drivers licenses to the transito for approval. So far my AKT bike is great, I don't think it will have problems, the quality seems far higher than the China bikes I've seen in Bolivia and it comes with a 12,000km guarantee, I think I will be looking at 5000-7000kms before selling, for which I will be expecting a resale of over $900 which is a very cheap sale compared to the prices in the classifieds here. Also they are chinese bikes which have been re-assembled here, I think they are advertised as 20% Colombian but I can't remember where I saw that. It is by far the most popular brand of bike in Bogotá, just about every 3rd bike is one, possibly more. Edit: Here's a good ride report, these guys rode 30,000kms around sth america on AKT125s |

Here is a copy of my rego form, you can see a box on the right hand side asking which document and which has the option 'otro', the lady who helped us selected this option and used our passport numbers without any issues however this was a reputable dealer, I wouldn't recommend this process from a local mechanic with a couple of bikes out front as they might just do a rush job, sell you the bikes then refuse to do the papers. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...avel1/test.jpg |
Just an update, today we were stopped by the police when going from Neiva to Popayan, they ran a check on the plates and told us we were all good to go so no problems in that respect either :thumbup1:
