Motorcycle Insurance... Buenos Aires
Panhandle1300, GREAT WEB SITE I REALLY ENJOYED IT....yes, insurance is mandatory in Argentina, at least liability insurance and a valid insurance card serves as your get out of jail free card if you are involved in an accident with extensive property damage, injury or death.
The police on the streets are not authorized to determine fault, so everyone involved goes to jail until a judge can sort things out. This might take as long as 6 months as the court dockets are full and so are the jails. HOPEFULLY, Your insurance agent will bail you out if you are not at fault and make sure you get legal counsel if you are at fault. Anyone who rides Argentina or any country without valid insurance or on a bike with a fraudulent title or title in transfer is risking their freedom and their fortunes. PARANA SEGUROS will insure motorcycles, not all insurance companies do, and the prices are the best I have found for simple liability coverage. See Raul Lalanne at (Maipu 215) phone 4320 0000 Rual is available in his 2nd floor office weekdays after 11 AM.... ask for him by name if you have trouble finding his office. The insurance company occupies several floors, but go directly to the office of Raul on the 2nd floor. Best you don't take a lot of gear with you security will make you leave it with them. i have sent more than 20 people bikes and vehicles to Raul with no complaints. Better to pay up front and not have them bill your credit card. The cost of insurance will be minimal like 20 or 30 dollars a month or less. Good luck and our phone numbers are on our web site... call and let's meet. Eat, Drink and BE Careful xfiltrate Ed and Elisa |

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info, I like the idea of the cheap cover but as my Spanish is non existent (we are trying to learn!) I think we will go with xfiltrates suggestion. Trying them this afternoon so will post how it goes. xfiltrate, I have your number and will give you a call, it would be good to meet up. Kev & Lorraine Hatchett |
Yes, i went to ATM this afternoon to insure the bike before leaving the port. Very pleasant people, very friendly, the cost rose to 40 pesos/month (still 10 dollars), no biggie. I paid 35 3 years ago, so their fare didnt follow inflation.
You can take one month only, and then extend it. They told me foreigners could be insured to neighbouring countries without extra cost : Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia. The main office is located one quarter away from the Obelisco, so it s extremely easy to access with public transport. They only insure motorcycles. No need to be worried about your language skills. They are used to deal with foreigners, all you need is your property document and your passport. Took me 5 minutes and i was insured. |

Parana Seguro charged me 40 Pesos per month also, only valid in Argentina but the policy is for 4 months. 5 minutes in Raul's office, which was easy enough to find and all was done, only needed the vehicle registration document.
Now all I need is my bike!!!!! |
Good for you!
Panhandle1300, thanks for following up and buying insurance. Happy to learn your cost is very resaonable compared to alternative of having an accident without insurance.
Also, I will mention here, Parana Seguros has been in business in Argentina more than 30 years and has a network of affiliate agents that handle claims throughout the country and in all bordering countries. So, if you have an accident in Cordoba or Santa Fe, or in the middle of nowhere, Argentina, one phone call to Rual (I hope you got his card) will get you hooked up with the local Parana agent. This extra service feature may or may not be available with all companies insuring bikes. Also, one needs to examine the "financial statement " of each insurance company. Although, your coverage is the mandatory minimum, new insurance companies pop up and then disappear regularly here. It is always better to go with an established company and develop a relationship with your insurance agent, who will remember who you are, if you call for help. Please verify there are no mistakes regarding your name, vin # and plate # listed on the insurance cards which you will be able to pick up from Rual. Better not to have these mailed to you. OK, ENJOY ARGENTINA Eat, Drink, and Be Careful xfiltrate |
