2013/2014 I was on a 8.5 month a trip through North and South America (Unterwegs | mit Jürgen).
Everyone who did a similar trip knows, there are problems from time to time, like my battery broke, my radiator got damaged off-road ... and finally I had a badly accident in Lima which forced me to quit my journey.

Most time it was easy to find someone to take care of the problems. Also I met a lot of other bikers, with whom I kept in contact and often we exchanged information. Where can you get tires? How was your experience with that dealer? Do you know a mechanic in this area?

I always thought it would be great to find this information somewhere in the internet, and sometimes you really need someone to trust and help you. So I started this thread to share my information.

As I rode a BMW lots of my information is around BMW dealers.

Harald helped me essentially after the accident with my motorcycle in Lima and organized the shipping of my damaged bike, when I already was at home.
He has a shop for motorcycle equipment, rents motorcycles and offers tours; has a lot of contacts; speaks German, Spanish, English.

** Punta Arenas
If you need tires you can get them cheap in the Zona Franca (tax free zone) in Punta Arenas. There are at least three shops which sell motorcycle tires. You might get lucky there.

* BMW mechanic
There is mechanic spezialised on BMW in Calle Ona 471, Punta Arenas. You als might get tires from him. Speaks Englisch.


** Santiago de Chile

Before going to BMW in Santiago, I would suggest to see

He runs his garage and equipment shop in a residential area. You even cannot see from outside that there is a shop/garage.

I had my chain and sprockets changed there. I liked it more than at BMW. He and his mechanic speak Englisch.


* BMW Santiago
Very friendly but very chaotic. Take your time. When they say 4 hours you can expect 8 hours. In February 2014 they were still located at the Las Condes (I don't know the number) next to Las Condes 7981, which is a Mototechnik shop
They told, that they are moving within half a year to the new headquarter in

Well organized, answers were fast, they gave me a F800 while mine was serviced, but it was expensive too.

Friendly mid age guy. Has a small garage, clean and always good for a chat.
I can really recommend him. While hew is working on your bike, you can fool around with his dachshund. :-)


** BMW Salta
Friendly and helpful. The Person of the service department speaks a bit English.

** San Miguel de Tucomán
Not very friendly, after not even looking really at and analyzing a problem, they suggested an expensive repair after 2 minutes.

Salta is way more nicer than San Miguel de Tucomán. If you have to stay a couple of days to fix thing, I would recommend Salta
