Mendoza to Rio de Janeiro. Best place to buy tires?
 

Im in need of some Anakee 2 tires for my Vstrom. I found some here in Mendoza, but for an obvious premium. Should I grab them while I can, or hold out for Cordoba or the triple frontera?

I don't know about Anakees, Cordoba, or even Strom tires....but I do just fine paying the going prices whenever I need tires and I find them in stock. Waiting somehow never seems to pan out: I waste time looking around endlessly in strange cities, they don't have my size in stock, I end up buying totally inappropriate tread patterns or not-quite-right sizes (usually thinner, which then wear out faster). And what seems like an "obvious premium" to you might just represent the price of a tire; they vary a lot by country here in the southern tier, with Peru being the cheapest by far for me and Chile the most expensive for identical Brazilian Pirellis.

I'll also say that I found Mendoza a good place for parts and repairs. Take that for what it's worth (or not), in very general terms.

you'll pay less than half at Cuidad del este if you can wait that long, there are loads of these bikes running around , I rekon you'll have no problem getting a tyre there...however , for peace of mind, if it ' ll save you the worry, get 'em where you know you can, its a lot less hassle!!

Hey Steve, remember me, well I had all sorts of problems because I had an opportunity to buy tyres, but decided I could get more out of them and get tyres later, well that was a big no go. There was never a proper sized tyre to fit, and don't worry about price, that Anakee2 that is on there is made of gold, I know how much it cost me, maybe you can melt it down ;)

If that rear tyre is about shot, get one now, how many miles has it done, the front should last for ages yet.

Are you venturing up into Venuzala? If so, maybe you can get one from Columbia, you won't have any luck near Bolivia, Peru or Ecuador unless you order one in specifically.

The other thing to think about is if th etyre is imported from Germany, then it is a better tyre and will cost more, a local Brazillian tyre will be rubbish.
