The motorcycle-legal roads in and out of LIMA
I will start the thread by saying that I am not a huge fan of Lima.
Last year I rode into it from the North and got into some trouble with the cops. Anyway I have to go back there to do some business and to fly home. What are the motorcycle-legal roads in and out of Lima? |

I live in Peru and am up on all the details of this. The best bet is to totally AVOID Lima! Keep on the 3N/3S and avoid the hassle.
From the north, ALL major routes into Lima are off limits for motorcycles. From the east, the main entrances are off limits, but if you take Benavides to LA MOLINA, then work your way over to Javier Prado at Ovalo Monitor Huascar, the following Javier Prado east to the central highway inland. On the south, the Panamerican anywhere north of Benavides. |
Thanks for chiming in! What a mess! I decided to buy tires in La Paz to avoid Lima in the end.
We are in Cusco and prolly headed your way in a week or so. Maybe I can meet you. JF |

I am in the states to speak at the HU Virginia meeting, and won't be back in Peru until May 10th, but the team is there and shop is open if you have any needs. :mchappy::mchappy::mchappy: |
Awe shucks!
Another time then! |
lima, what a nightmare that was...i made the mistake of going all the way to miraflores, took me almost 3h.
anyway, the only one i can remember that was expclitily forbidden for motorcycles was that big 4 lane highway through the middle but as i recall there were signs posted. |
Ouch - I wasnt aware of this. What a PITA! Thanks forvthe information. Im probably going to Peru and Lima in 1-2 months from now. Would like to visit Lima but maybe find a secure place to park the bike for a few days outside the city and take a bus into the city? Any advice about this?

You can easily get into Lima from the south, getting off the Panam at Ave. Benavides which will take you right into Miraflores. Exit south the same way.
To go east up into the Andes and the 3N/3S, go back out on Benavides, cross over the Panam., then work your way north and east to the oval on Javier Prado, then east until it drops you off on the main road going east. Almost impossible to go north through and out of Lima. besides, you don't want to travel the coast anyway. It's dirty, boring, more expensive, and corupt police on the north coast. PM for more details on how to get around Lima (there are many great ways!). :mchappy::mchappy::mchappy: |

Lima - worth a visit
I rode through Lima in 2013, entered from the south, left through the north and into the bleak PanAm stretch that lies above. Fortunately my trip was before the restrictions were applied.
Even with highway restrictions, Lima is well worth the effort to visit. There are a several art museums of note (MALI - Museo de Arte de Lima, MAC - Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Lima), amazing churches including the Monastery of San Francisco - catacombs!, the Huaca Pucllana pyramid and don't miss the national level archeology museum Larco Museum. In 2014, 2016 and 2018 I returned to Lima on my way to short rides in the Andes, and always set aside time to enjoy the city. The food scene is world class and there are many more attractions that I haven't had time to visit... Once in the city, park your bike and take the Metropolitano bus system. There are several routes through Lima with dedicated bus only lanes. The highways may be gridlocked, but the buses fly along on the Metropolitano. |
Crikey, we were two up in Lima going North in September, then back South in December and didnt have any issues with access. In both cases we rode on the 4 lane road as its the easiest and only once had to use the "dumb gringo" excusse.....it works wonders. Yes the traffic can be tough but thats half the enjoyment, lane splitting and dogging cars. We stayed in Mira and Biranco and rode all around......just go and ride and if the police stop you then just smile.....its all part of it

Thanks
