Motorcycle route from Belize to Guatemala?
Is there a motorcycle route from Belize to Guatemala? If so what is it? I'd like to visit Tical and then Atitlan.
Thanks, Ness |
The 2 main highways in Belize are called the North highway and the West highway by the people in Belize City. The west highway goes to the Guatemalan border. It is paved to the border, then the first 15 (?) miles of GT are dirt. Easily ridden on any bike though. BZ City to Tikal is an easy days ride, even if you start out late with a Belikin (BZ beer) hangover, and get to the border right after a couple of busses. Tikal was a highlight of my trip last fall. If you only make it to one ruin, make it Tikal.

i did that route in march, and as last post mentions 1st miles were some kind of surface!- just very bumpy, after that no. probs to Tikal.
Went then to Flores, Coban, Guatemala city, Atitlan. donĀ“t know no. of road, but on my map secondary route (fine red line) from Flores - la libertad - sayaxche there was a small river crossing around here with a ferry, road was fine (i only got bit unstuck on a dirt road off to the west to lago lachua ) After Coban stuck to main roads (ie yellow and thick red on map) and was good all the way to Atitlan, great views approaching Atitlan mareestu |
Hello there,
The road is as Mary says good (we traveled together along this road). Some of the roads further south of Tikal are not the best, no matter what the map says. Infact the road out of Belize heading into Guatemala was a fun experience, 20km of bumpy stoney road, but it was a good laugh. Mary watched me dissapear into a big old crater in the road and re-appear, just....so do keep an eye on the road. Have fun! Brian http://colesyboy.tripod.com |
