North into Chile

I want to cross from northern Argentinia (near Salta or so) into Chile. There seem to be three passes, all of them on gravel and high level (4000 +). Has anyone any experiences on them? Will the weather be okay at the end of february?

Thank you,

Karl

Paso De Jama is paved on both sides so thats easiest, Paso San Francisco is paved on the Argentina side but sand/gravel/horrible in Chile.

Paso Agua Negra is paved in Argentina but gravel/dirt in Chile and you get to ride past a glacier.

It'll be cold up there this time of year so you dont want to hang around, I'd suggest Paso de Jama.

yepp, I did Paso Jama in October 2005, from Salta to San Pedro de Atacama in one day without hurrying and taking loads of pictures. Mostly great new pavement. Some great curves. Amazingly beautiful landscape. After the Argentine border post it got quite chilly and windy, slowing me somewhat down. Fuel available in San Pedro and Susques (275 km).
Have fun!

Tanks for all the info, its still gravel roads on my maps, but the new pavement explains all. I can do 250 kilometers max. on my tank, will Ihave to take spare fuel?

Yepp, do so, since as I stated it's 275-280 km between the two filling stations and your bike might consume more than usually due to strong adverse winds and long uphill stretches.
I always carried a 10L extra can from COPEC (Chile).

Hi Tires

This is very off topic, so please forgive me.
I have heard of a young man from my town in Ireland who has gone missing in Chile.
He hasnt been heard from for the past 20 days and everyone is worried sick.
I am just starting to do something to help out.
If you come across any information on an Irish guy called Ronan Lawlor please let me know

Gary

Tires,
Do you know how's Paso Aguas Negras now? We're going to pass there on december, 31.
A hug,
