Peru Custom Issue

After a six mounth trip around South America in 2002, I left my bike in Lima, planning on returning to finish my trip one day. That day has come, the bike has been serviced by the Yamaha Dealer(it's a tenere offcourse) there, and is ready for the new adventure. The only thing left is the custum issue. The temperary 3 mounth importpermit I got in 2002 has been long expired. I've been trying through embassy's and custumbrokers to solve the issue without any succes so far.

All tips and ideas are welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Mills

Sorry, I have no answers for you - this situation has always been recommended against!

PLEASE DO let us know what happens - it IS of great interest to all.

The real question is: What IS the penalty for overstaying? What do they want to do?

(Note that it cost Leif Mortensen $3,500 to get his Harley out of Guatemala after only overstaying a week. See http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/new.../2004-03.shtml )

Hi Mill,s

To avoid any problems you might go to the coast-border Peru-Equador.

This border actually is in a town and becourse of that it,s possible to "just cross it" even on your bike (I did it).
Don,t pay any atention to people yelling at you about customs etc... If anyone (oficially asks) just tell them you "missed" the customs at the other side and so have to return. (it seems to happen a lot)

Don,t process your bike !!!!! leaving Peru. Just yourself (imigration only).

Then drive into Equador and process yourself again (imigration only!!). Stay the night (plenty of good and cheap hotels) and the next day, leave Equador (again just imigration!) and enter Peru complete this time (customs and imigration)

If you have a carnet de passage you can even just leave peru (imigration only) and enter Equador complete (customs and imigration)

You can probably do the same at the crossing into Bolivia (in the town, not on the highway)...

Hope it helps
Maarten

we just left our bike in northern peru for next years summer and will have to face the same problem - leaving north.
i agree with the statement above, the panam crossing north of tumbes to ecuador seems to be rather chaotic, so getting around the customs could be possible.
but watch out: there is a big customs checkpoint between mancora and punta sal, where sometimes northbound vehicles are checked (we had that pleasure).
of course, i found a way around it (thanks to satellite pictures): you can drive all along the beach to punta sal (low tide), which is a great ride anyway (no people)!

another option is to stay in peru: police checks never asked for the customs paper. exception: big checkpoint immediatly north of limas on the panam. beware!

good luck to everyone

another customs checkpoint awaits you on the way from puno to the desaguadero and copacabana border crossings - watch out with invalid papers...

and - as far as i remember (we passed it without being stopped), there was another one on the way from puno to cusco - several kms behind the pass.

good luck, again

Thanks all for the info.

This our route to get out of the country. Lima - Oroya - Huancayo - Ayacucho - Cusco - Peurto Maldondo - Inapari bordercrossing with Brazil

You knows the cheakpoints?
What do they check for, just pasport and driverslicence, or custompapers as well?
Is there a custom control at the border at Inapari?(according to the latest guidebooks there is a new bridge and a custumoffice, who has been there?)

Thanks
