Peru to Bolivia border
Hi all
I am looking at crossing the border from Peru to Bolivia at the Khasani crossing near Copacabana. But I want to cross on December 24th, so does anyone know if that is feasible or if they shut / are short staffed etc over the Christmas period? Thanks in advance for your help. |
Seems to me a group of us crossed there one New Year’s Eve, and as the laggard of the group I barely squeaked through when they closed up early on the Bolivia side. So although my memory is suspect and my experience is over a decade ago, caution is certainly called for. I’d suggest aiming for a mid-afternoon crossing and having a backup plan.
Hope that’s helpful. Mark |
Last year I crossed & posted the following:
No Peruvian immigration at the Khasani-Yunguyo crossing On the Bolivian side you can stamp out & clear customs……but on the Peruvian side there is nothing - apparently the immigration/customs offices were destroyed by protesters On the advice of Bolivian immigration, I drove to Puno. Unfortunately it was a Saturday & the main immigration office (near the tourist police station) was closed….as was customs. I was fortunate - the tourist police guided me to the iPeru tourist information office who told me that I could stamp in at a small immigration facility down at the port. In addition, she kindly arranged for the guy at customs to help out & meet me at the office to provide a TIP So be advised, especially if crossing at the weekend, this could be a lengthy process No idea if this is still the case, so I would advise trying to contact the main immigration office in Puno…..unless anyone knows differently |
I crossed from Peru to Bolivia a couple of days ago. No idea what their holiday hours will be. But my experience was a very quiet crossing. We were the only ones there. Stamped out and cancelled TIP on Peruvian side and got Visa, stamped in and TIP on Bolivian side.
The Visa is kind of a pain but you can get it done there. You have to fill the app in online but also bring copies of it and the attachments and 2x passport photos. It was $160US for the Visa. They take credit cards. |
Hi Geoffh,
I see from one of your posts that you are from the UK. You must be stamped into Bolivia but do not need a visa. Visitors from the United States pay $160 for a visa. Of course, you will need to complete the TIP documentation process. https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-ad...y-requirements |
thanks great information from this community, I am from Peru and I am planning to go to Bolivia.
