Raising the V-Strom: Buy raising links in USA & Ship to Colombia or find them there?
 

Hi folks:

Waiting on my March 6th sailing to Cartagena on the Stalratte... chilling out Norm; an awesome guy I met on horizonsunlimited.com who's putting me up at his place just outside of David, Panama.

In any case I'm pretty damn tired of slamming the bottom of the V-Strom on top of topes and rocks on off-road roads. And yes I know the V-Strom isn't the best off road vehicle; it's what I've got. And I do like taking it off pavement as some off-road roads I've done are simply amazing.

I'm thinking about raising up the back end as I'm 6'6" and could flat foot the bike without difficulty. The ones in particular I'm considering are: http://www.soupysperformance.com/cat...00/4618738.htm.

Sadly I'm leaving Panama before airbox express can get me this package; so I'm looking at 2-3 weeks for the part to arrive in Colombia plus the cost of shipping.

I'm wondering:
1) Would you think you could find something like this down there, or better to buy it in the States and have it shipped?
2) If I do ship it, what method would you recommend? USPS Priority Mail? How long am I looking at waiting? 2-3weeks? 1 month?

Never looked for lowering links but would think that finding some that would fit your bike would be quite difficult. Ordering is your safest bet. If you are adventurous you could find a machine shop and have a set manufactured. Especially if you have some spare time to look around for a shop and wait.

Talk to Mike at Casablanca Hostel (in Cali: Google it) and see what he thinks. You need someone with a parts pipeline and a friend in the aduana.

Basically, I think you'd be better off having links made by a reputable machine shop. You've got a week to spare before your boat: do it now or in Colombia. Not that difficult: I made five thousand or more miles from Suriname to Guatemala with a pair made of flat soft steel with two holes drilled in them (long story).

Expect handling issues at least until you get it dialed in.

My buddy on a wee strom found raising links for his v strom in Medellin. Plenty of bikes shops, and plenty of V Stroms out there (they are assembled in country, and are the cheapest big bike available in Columbia).

Links are VERY simple things.

It may be far easier to get them made up out of some aluminium bar by an engineering company where you are.
