RHD in South America
A friend is strongly considering Pan America in a Land Cruiser, but using a UK car and shipping it back when the trip is done.
He's also been told that Bolivia, Honduras and El Salvador don't allow RHD vehicles. I shall be looking at the appropriate websites to try and establish if this is correct or not but was wondering if anybody has recent experience? Many thanks in advance |
Previous owners of our IVECO spent a couple of years driving around Central and South America and I specifically asked them about this and they reported no problems at all. Personally I only have experience with Argentina and Chile (also mentioned as banning RHD cars) and it was never an issue at the border posts.
Was a source of constant amusement for the locals though, and momentary bemusement for the police who always did a bit of a double-take and then came around to my side of the vehicle to conduct their business. |
Have a look here

Thanks all, appreciated.
The impression I got was that it's possible, just takes a little effort. |
Based on the "what they don't know about can't hurt you" reasoning, one suggestion I was given was when approaching a border post, try to park so the front of the vehicle is facing away from the office windows.
