Road to Ushuaia open all year long?
I heard today that road to Ushuaia will be closed at the end of April (every year).
Is this really true, or just a rumour? What has been the latest time (winter in southern hemisphere) when you have ridden or driven there? |
You can. If you have a snowmobile. :innocent:
Even in their 'Summer' (Dec, Jan), temperatures can be freezing at night. It's not called the end of the world for nothing. |

Freezing temperatures are ok, a bit of snow is ok (just makes riding a bit slower) |
Non one can guess the weather. It will be proper freezing. I'm just guessing, but I'm sure that legally the road will be open but if its ridable is another story. I can imagine it will all be closed down there too. Campsites and hostels especially. I have a friend who has family down there. I will ask him.

Thanks for this info Cleland!
I have been riding and camping in temperatures below -20C, so I have a good idea how to tackle freezing temperatures (I am from Finland). :mchappy: Of course nature can throw sometimes quite a surprises, so never underestimate it. :rain: |
As Cleland says, the road is open year-round. It's well-traveled, and not nearly as cold as latitude would suggest. During winter, check the weather a few days ahead to avoid being stranded by conditions or temporary closures. During summer, do the same (although consequences will generally be less severe).
If you're from Finland, you'll wonder what the above fuss was about. Hope that's helpful. Mark |
