Santiago to Buenos Aires on a 125cc - possible?
 

I'm planning to bike from Santiago, Chile to Buenos Aires, Argentina via Ushuaia, with a friend. Buying the bikes in Santiago. I've read loads of helpful threads on the ways to go about buying a bike in Chile.

My question is: is it possible to cover that distance on a 125cc bike loaded with equipment? The aim isn't to cover as much ground in the shortest time and no doubt it won't be as comfortable as on a bigger bike. We want to buy the bikes for around £500 MAX - reason why I'm asking about 125cc's as they're cheaper.

125s are great travel bikes - just pack light!

A lot of persons had done similar things, you just be pacient.

The honda cgl and the suzuki Gn 125 are two of the more popular bikes.
Many have done it on both those models. The Gn may have a slightly higher top speed from memory.

NO GUTS NO GLORY - Intro

We have travelled from Santiago to Ushuaia and are almost back to Buenos Aires. We met two guys travelling on 50cc motorbikes from Ushuaia to Alaska so anything is possible.

Your biggest difficulty will be distance between petrol stations. As long as you plan carefully, you should be fine, but there are likely to be several times when you will be asking for it from strangers, but that is part of the fun

I am travelling on a 4 months old Bajaj Pulsar 180cc with Chilean licence plate. The bike has side bags, big luggage rack, in good condition. I am going to sell it around the end of February/beginning of March 2012 in Chile.

How many miles per day are you guys capable of doing, per day, on 125cc bikes? 450 km/day (280 miles/day) is a feasible goal?
I´m planning my next trip right now I´m assuming my daily milage somewhere between 300 and 400 km/day (185 to 250 miles/day), riding 5 days in a row and a day off.

Can someone tell me why i bought a 1200 cc monster if people are riding around on 50cc jobs?

Most of the guys with big bikes that I know, have those bikes because of the status. Most of those guys never rode more than 100 miles from their warm beds, even with big Electra Glide Harleys or 1200GS in their garages.

Met a bloke riding a Honda CT90 (in 1974) in Peru who was on his way home to Canada. He had just done Canada-Tierra del Fuego and was on his way home!

Specials hight up at more then 4000 meters altitude my small 125ccm bike does not go very fast. 400 km at sea level is possible but hight up in the mauntains its no fun anymore...

On a motorbike through Bolivia and Peru part 2

Doing Ecuador/Peru/Bolivia on a 180cc now (just arrived in La Paz).

On only asfalt along the cost 400km is possible. But 200km is more likely. At altitude (lets say ´not the coast´) 200 up to 300km is possible for me. In Bolivia my cruising speed is only 70km/h. Yes, I´d like a stronger bike at altitudes (but we are doing fine),.

125cc is fun, but you will go slow (and adapt....)

Oh, by the way: bring full weather clothes (full sun & snow in one day).
