Selling a 3rd hand bike in South america
Hola chicos,
So if one was to buy a US registered bike in South america from the original owner the easiest way is to go to a notaría and transfer the rights to the new owner, even though the bike is actually still in the original owners name on the official vehicle document the notaría documenta allow you to cross boarders and legally ride etc. My question is what happens when the next person tries to sell it to another tourist at the end of their trip? Again is it OK to go to a notaría and transfer to the new owner? I think this results in a daisy chain of documents but I believe is possible. Also from what I understand Colombia and Chile are the best countries for trades like this. Could some please clarify or shed some light on the situation. Muchas gracias |
Seen registration papers from other travelers photoshopped and copied so many times the quality was terrible and they still traveled with it down here with no problems.

Very good to know. Thanks for the reply.

Still no excuse to get sloppy.
After traveling here on my own bike, I would be a lot more eager to buy a used bike from another traveler for a futur trip. |
Maybe I am wrong but what I know is this:
If the bike is US (or EU) registered, everything goes through the State (or country) where it is registered. The actual location of the vehicle has nothing to do. For example, people with California registered bikes or cars, have someone to do the title transfer at the local authority back home and then they get the new plates posted where they are for the new owner. Same goes for the EU title transfers (the process is a bit different) but again you have nothing to do with notarias etc. There is an american guy who helps with title transfers especially for US registered vehicles and has really good reviews on FB. His FB name is Alex Smith and his business FB page is: https://www.facebook.com/OverlandTitles/ |
Also very good to know and thanks a lot for the reply. Have been in touch with Alex and he is extremely helpful and knowledgeable.
