shipping bike Quito->USA
 

So there isn't really anything in the shipping database for this- or for anywhere in Quito. The best price I've found is about $1100, and that doesn't include crating. Another company wants about the same, plus $600 for crating!

So, does anyone know of a company that has experience with HU people? Or a local moto shop that will make a crate or has crates?

This company was on the receiving end of my shipment from Miami. GET ALL COSTS IN WRITING! They will try to screw you. They said they could be the sending company to Miami, but I do not think they have actually ever shipped out a moto and so may not know about hazardous goods.

Costs of shipping
 

I had built my own crate for my Harley Sportster and towed it to Miami.
1. Air Freight (actual flight cost-everything else listed are add ons)-$181
2. Dangerous goods surcharge-$100
3. Fuel Surcharge-$200
4. Security/War risk-$60.60
5. Forwarding-$25
6. Airport transfer-$40.40
7. Fumigating my wood crate-$120
8. Inspection charge (inspectors charge for providing dangerous goods certificate #2.)
9. Inland freight (cost to take the bike to fumigator)
10. Customs validation- $75

Total- $964.80 ( at least in the US they itemize how they screw
you)
Then in Quito I had to pay Cal-Vima maybe $150.
My suggestion is to tell the shipper you chose that it only cost you $150 to have a crate built in the US and only $550-$600 total to ship it to (chose your SA country other than Ecuador), so why are they so much higher than the expensive US. Don't make up any other details, just put them on defensive to justify their costs. They are MUCH more willing to haggle and haggle for a few bucks then we are. Good Luck. Ted, how are things? Are you going home then? Have you considered flying from Colombia? Try to contact Cielos de Peru in Bogota (El Dorado airport). My bike flew from London via Miami to Bogota. They did the Miami-Bogota part very efficiently. I will try to dig their tel number if you want. They were very friendly and helpful, they might be able to get you some info!

We ended up sending it through a company from Quito. It worked out better because we needed to depart from there, and our bike needed some parts before we could ride it that far.
