SOAP chile
Having just arrived in Chile, we discovered that the law changed recently and all foreign registered bikes must get SOAP (although I thought it was always necessary) The only company seems to be magallanes.cl and they now have the possibility to purchase this on line - the website went live last week.. We struggled and ended up going to their offices but have been assured that they will be updating the web very shortly to make it easier.

What does SOAP mean?

It is the obligatory insurance needed in Chile...
Seguros Obligatorio accident personal Basically it is a 3rd party insurance in case you hit someone. We paid around USD35 for 3 months so not expensive. |
Beware though, this is only 3rd party insurance for the passengers you may hurt, it won't cover the other persons vehicle.
I did once convince magallanes to give me cover for 8 south american countries, at the time it was only Argentina asking for it, not sure where else it's required these days though. |
One I've got covers Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia.
Haven't been asked for it in 4 border crossings so they are very slack in enforcing it, especially since it would only take a few seconds to make at least a cursory check of the policy document. |

We found coverage in Argentina for there plus Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru for just US$11 per month. ATM seguros (<-- link for other locations, Salta info posted below) was cheaper and with better coverage than the Federacion Patronal (in Salta - S24 47.214 / W65 24.830, which is not on their locations page). Other useful info at this post. Not sure if/when online enrollment will be up and running, but many locations across Argentina. Hope this helps.
ATM Seguros Pje. Ruiz de los Llanos 1230 (4400) Salta Tel: (0387) 422 - 4247 GPS: S24 deg 47.536 min / W65 deg 25.202 min |

The Carta Verde that ATM gave me was accepted at the Bolivian border and by a Peruvian cop when I was stopped and had docs inspected, but that doesn't mean it will suffice if you have a prang. I may be wrong, but I'd do a bit more research about the ATM package for countries such as Peru and Bol where SOAT is obligatory. I didn't know about SOAP in Chile being obligatory now and when I had a smash in Santiago a year ago, the ATM insurance did the job. I assume ATM will cover Arg since it is sold in Arg. |
We got our insurance yesterday at a cost of $80 US for 12 months, so $6.67 / month.
Covers Peru, Arg, Chile, Brasil, Uruguay and Paraguay. We had SOAT in Peru and we are not heading back in so can't test that theory, we are going to Bolivia tho. Our SOAT in Peru was $11 US per month and we got 3 months, seems at the big borders you have no bargaining power or choice, we got ours in Jaen. Hope this helps gents, hopefully now we have it we won't need it.:D Thanks for the info csustewy |
Latest advice?
I read this thread and am a bit confused.:helpsmilie:
I am travelling to Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia. 1. Do I need a SOAP/SOAT for these countries? 2. Where can I get them? Thanks. |
Just arrived at Magallanes office in Puerto Montt and they say they can't make SOAP for non Chilean Motorbikes. Any suggestions?

Went to Falabella Seguros - they told me the only sell online
Went to Magallanes - the told me they only sell online Went to BCI seguros - they told me they only sell online Went to MAPFRE and they started tp write a policy then they were confused by foreign DL and told me they could not sell me a policy. Gonna try online but I dont like not having paper in hand. Edit: could not buy online, their systems didnt accept my plate. Rode across Argentinian border to Mendoza, went to Triunfo and bought coverage there in 30 minutes. |
