SOAT going into Peru from the south.

Second choice is to do whatever I can get away with, but first choice would be to get insurance asap when we cross from Bolivia on the southern side of lake Titicaca.

Anyone had any success in finding an office that will issue the policy. Closer to the border the better.

Or via the web using paypal or similar to pay.

Wishful thinking, but worth asking.

Tony,

I last crossed in Feb. Got La Positiva SOAT here;

This is where they sell you temporary SOAT in Puno, Peru. - ADVrider

No problems at the Peruvian border at Copa.

When I tried to buy another month from the La Positiva office in Trujillo up north, I was told it was no longer possible - a year minimum now for tourists, same as locals. But you never know, Puno may still do 1-3 months for tourists; I got one month from Paita when I crossed back from Ecuador in June from La Positiva.

We intend leaving the vehicle in Cuzco for 6 months so I guess if I do have to buy 12 months cover it isn't the end of the world.

I've got that Puno address on the GPS so may have to get it there, but of course that means driving uninsured nearly half way to my intended destination.

March 2014

I crossed from Bolivia into Peru south of Copacabana and north of Yunguyo, Peru. The National Police gave me a a little bit of hard time because I didn't have insurance, but of course it is not for sale at the frontier. I promised to drive slowly and carefully to Puno. There might be someone in Yunguyo that sells it, but it was a Sunday afternoon and chances were low of finding an insurance agent. Hey, you never know. I bought insurance at an Exito grocery store in Colombia on a Saturday night. Regardless, I pressed on to Puno and bought a short term policy the next day. A friend (not traveling with me) skipped the insurance purchase and got stung with a ticket...

Tony, are you up to speed about suspending your TVIP? You'll need to if you are going to leave the van in Cusco 6 months. Doable - I did so with my moto this summer. Can be done through local SUNAT in Cusco.

Yes, thanks El Forko. Think I've got most of the procedure nailed down. Medical Excuse letter written in English and Google Translate Spanish, Doctor appointment email, plus air ticket confirmation. Just need some help at Quinta Lala to complete the process.
Then fingers crossed that they approve it.

I'll check for insurance in Yuyungo. Thanks Peter. Might have to camp on the lake shore for a couple of nights until Monday, but that won't be any hardship. Plenty of POIs on my GPS that will do.
