Socompa pass Northern Argentina
 

Hi All,

does anyone know whether the Socompa pass connecting Salta and Antofagasta can be done by motorbike? Any restrictions at the border? Is it possible to head north to San Pedro de Atacama from the Chilean side of the Socompa pass? What kind of surface can I expect there?

How about this alternate
 

From Salta head toward San Antonio de Los Cobres on RN51 then on to Passo Sisco, Toconao and San Pedro de Atacama. I covered this ground in January of this year and was all good, only one small area of soft sand but lots of good gravel.

The maps I have so show a road north out of Neurara about 40km nortwest of Socompa and come in on RN23 about 50km south of San Pedro but I have no info on road conditions.

If you are going to try Salta to San Perdo in one day, be aware the customs office in San Pedros closes at 10pm (20:00).
