South America Carnet
 

Dear all,

We are travelling through south America for 3 months. Vehicle is arriving into Colombia then we go through: Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and maybe Uruguay and Paraguay.

Having just had our last carnet run out as it only is valid for 12 months, the official info on whether we need it for south America is 'recommended but not required.' For us this is an extra £1,250 which for something that isn't required seems like something that if possible we would like to avoid.

Does anyone have any practical experience in these countries (crossing borders etc) where the carnet was definitely needed?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Sharing my personal experience here. Rode through Mexico and every country in Central and South America (except Chile and Paraguay - you won't have any problems in these countries.) Never needed a carnet.

Enjoy your trip.

One friend travelled around all of SA for several years and never had a carnet. Another crossed every border at least once and some several times and also never had nor needed a carnet.

NO Carnet needed, just vehicle paperwork, owners docs etc and must be current registered, but the latter can be gotten around if need be

Photo of Temporary import document for Colombia
 

Sorry to bother people but we are still having issues in Colombia. Our vehicle has arrived on the ship- and one customs official wanted us in on a 'transit permit' and another said that wasn't allowed. We have been saying all along that what we need is a temporary import permit but they don't really seem to listen. Does anyone have a photo of one they could post so that we could show the customs guy please? This has been rumbling on a week now and we have another meeting tomorrow morning! fingers crossed!

TVIP is ALL you need, will see if we can post up our once later on so you can show them, the Colombian customs etc work backwards here.

The TVIP is call in different ways even inside same each country, a “Temporary Import Permit” is a “transit Permit”, as far I know isn’t different kind of permits in anywhere. Isn’t a document you have to provide them, they must issue it for you and they have to know it. A photo to show only will work if it’s a Colombian permit. Maybe you were talking with the ones who sweep the floor or the one who just use the stamp... My advice, just ask for the “Jefe”, each day your bike stay in a warehouse it will cost you.
Then some people say that Argentina is complicate....
