South of Brasil by Sidecar

Hello travellers, after almost 11 months of riding around South America on our sidecar it is time to enter into our last country.......BRASIL!!!!!!

We are really looking forward to riding in this country learn some more portuguese and see all about the Brasilian culture.

The idea is to enter Brasil crossing from Uruguay (border crossing not defined yet) and ride up north on the coast to Florianopolis, from here find the way to go and see Foz de Iguazu and then ride back towards the coast to visit a friend in Curitiba. Once in Curitiba would ride to Rio take a plane to go and see the family in USA and then come back to keep riding up north to Fortaleza where we will finish our trip.

So we are sharing all this to see if we can find somebody here in the community that can give us a hand in a couple of things.

1. We need to find a place where we can leave our DL1000+sidecar in Rio or somewhere close by during the days we will be away (from June 11-Aug 03). Our bike has to stay with someone willing to give her some love turning the engine on once in a while and even take her for a little ride!!!!! All these to keep her in good shape while we are gone :mchappy:

2. We would really appreciate if anyone here can give us some recomendations on routes to do going from Uruguay to Rio passing by the three places we would like to go (Florianopolis, Foz de Iguazu and Curitiba).

We are open to any suggestions, recomendations or invitations ;)

Thanks a lot for your help :thumbup1:

Hey you two

Good to catch you on the Carreterra Austral.

You can do 100% of your Brasil part on tar if you want or you can do a mix, all roads pretty good nic.

Spend time in Urubici and around, beautiful.

We did all the places you are talking of, see our ride report from here on....rather than me waffle on again.

I am not sure if we can help with storage but will ask some questions at least and get back to you.

We carried on down to Villa O'Hiigins and we are now in Ushuaia, heading east tomorrow then northward.

Cheers Andi & Ellen

Can´t help on where to leave the rig in Rio but I may suggest a couple fo places to visit.

Urubici region is very nice for motorcycle riding. Serra do Corvo Branco is awesome but it is currently being paved so check conditions before going there.

Very close to it is Serra do Rio do Rastro, just wonderful, worth going down and then back up.

Don´t miss Itaimbezinho/Fortaleza canions and the region of Aparados da Serra, the most beautiful canions in South America.

From Florianopolis to Rio try to avoid, to the extent possible, the major highways (BR 101 and then BR 116). There is no way to completely avoid them but there are some nice detours. From Florianopolis you may go Sao Francisco do Sul, then Guaratuba, Morretes and then up Serra da Graciosa, a very nice winding brick road. Take a left on BR 116 and then Curitiba.

From Curitiba to Rio try to avoid, to the extent possible, BR116. You may take it until you reach Juquia/Miracatu and then go to Peruibe, Cubatao and then the beautiful/scenic BR101 that will go along the coast all the way up to Rio. If you decide to take this route, let me know and I will give further details on nice places to spend the night, including Ilhabela, where I live and would be more than glad to host you.

Unless you have a specific reason to go there, I would avoid Sao Paulo.

Cheers! Fernando
