Tyres in Peru, Bolivia, Northern Chile
Where's the best spot for getting hold of tyres for an Africa Twin (17" 140/70 and 21" 90/90). Currently in Lima with a bit (2000 miles?) of rubber left on the current set.
Cheers Matt [This message has been edited by mattpope (edited 29 November 2004).] |
Hi Matt,
if you found them in Lima, buy them! In Bolivia chances are a lot slimmer. In Santiago I got tires for my FJ1200 already back in 1990, but I wonder if prices are cheaper than Peru. For my Landcruiser with which I am travlling now(Cuzco at this time) the tires are chepaer in Lima than Chile(negotiate the price though and they should give you money for the old tires!US10 at least Buen viaje, Marcel |
Hallo!
Do not worry, i am on an African Twin as well and i bought tires in La Paz (front and back). May be you have to go with 130/80 or 130/90, but you will be fine! Go there the straight away when you get there, they will tell you next day, but it takes two days and you have them for sure! You get them there where they sell all the parts for the cars, there are 2 or 3 motorcicle dealers as well, but i do not remember the streetname! Sucre is even easyer they have them in the store! They are cheep, back 45,-$ front 25,-$ In Cuzco they are hard to find and it takes more time! Good luck Albert |
Great news for me there Albert.
What type of tyres are we talking? Have found Pirelli MT60s normally easy to find en route. But I don't rate the wear rate - Changed the last set in Bogota and reckon to only having 6000-7000kms from the rear and a little more than that. Either these are most abrasive roads or the tyres just don't last as well. Hope there's not too much rain further south - currently in Lima and heading that way. Matt |
Yesterday I replaced the rear tire in my Africa Twin, I installed the Metzeler Enduro 3 Sahara for Ch$60.000, aroud US$100, in 140/80-17 in MX Las Condes, Av. Kennedy corner to Padre Hurtado, Santiago.
Probably is close to impossible to find this tire in the Chilean North, but probably some motorcycle service can buy it in MX Las Condes for you. ------------------ Ya verĂ¡s como quieren en Chile al amigo cuando es forastero (traditional song) Jose Pedro Espinosa Curico, Chile |
Hi Matt,
In Sucre you can get new tyres very cheap. We just bought Pirellis MT21 (for our BMWs, 56 euro per set! At Avenida Jaimi Mendoza there are several motorshops, they had them immediate available. If not, there is as well Hi Motors, very close by Jami Mendoza, who are a bit more expensive, but have queit some tyres in stock as well. For 15 bolivianos (1,5 euro) Ricardo and Esteban Negron (C. Oscar Alfaro No 1 y 3) change tires for you. And a whole lot more. They were extremely helpful, friendly and professional. As endurobikers themselves they know what they are doing. We had some more problems and they fixed it all. Good luck, Leo and Claire Quote:
