There's also a donation page, if you feel so inclined.

Donated.

Nightmare scenario and a reminder to check the small print on your insurance policies - despite having 3 policies (including World Nomads) none are willing to pay out for his medical bills. It's already cost him his leg, and he's not out of the water yet unless he gets proper treatment and care :(

Indeed, nightmare scenario. Hope he is able to extract himself from this situation. I've donated too.

Interesting, WN advertise on the HU homepage and there's a major "health warning" by GJ underneath regarding checking the policy small print.

The following is just conjecture as I don't know the full facts, but reading posts by trustworthy British bike travellers on the HU FB group, WN either only covers UK residents / citizens on bikes to 125cc OR possibly not at all (!!!) if your main mode of transport is a motorcycle...

A very sad update: Workington man in Brazil motorbike crash dies | Border - ITV News

Snakeboy 2 May 2018 23:38

Ouch - what a tragic accident. I was in Corumba some 10-12 days ago and I actually spent two nights there, and I did hear about the accident. Although there were a lot of language problems I understood there were an englishman quite badly injuried there with might lose his leg.

Im also a experienced nurse with lots of year in an trauma orthopedic ward and nobody should die because of a broken femur and some fractured ribs. I fear that he had not the best medical care that was available. Which of course is natural when none of his insurances would cover him.

May he rest in piece and may his near and dear ones get help in overcoming their shock and sorrows.

Anyone has info on why World Nomads declined him!?

Lots of people use that company so we need to spread the word.

RIP to this rider, I hate to see that possibly he could have been saved from his purchased coverage.

And also dont drink and drive and report any drunk drivers you see. We reported one in Peru and the cops acted quickly and pulled him over.

It also appears that other nationalities have other Ts and Cs...

I don't know the exact stats of how many HUBBers are UK citizens (a large percentage as per the attendance at HU UK meeting compared to other countries?!??) and I clearly don't know whether this tragic biking brother saw the WN advert on HU, but I believe the health warning underneath the World Nomads advert on the HU homepage should be even more explicit that UK riders aren't covered if they are on anything bigger than a moped OR if they are using said moped (or any m/c) as their main means of transport.

There was a long thread on the HU FB group, including a screenshot of some of the relevant policy exclusions (supporting my 125cc/main mode of transport comment). This entire FB HU thread seems now to have disappeared. Can't find it anymore by browsing or using the FB search function :( Nor can others.

I did find a partial version of it though, in the cache of my cell phone.

I'll just take a screenshot of this HUBB thread now, for posterity.

This is what you're told when you say you're from the UK and want to use a m/c as your main mode of transport on a World Nomads policy:

It's important to be aware that there were more than 10 days between Chris Peck's accident and his tragic death. Had he an insurance that would have paid for the transport to and treatment in a top hospital in cities like Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo for example, he might have lived?

Yes, we are British bikers travelling in South America. We were insured with Holidaysafe on their specialist motorcycling policy, however they would not renew until we had been back in the UK 6 months. I looked at WN because they advertise that you can take the policy out when already abroad, however when you go to buy the policy and you use the drop-down list to check what's covered (or not) then as a UK citizen the policy does NOT cover you for motorcycles as your main road of transport (of ANY size), motorcycle touring on ANY bike but you can get an add-on to cover trail-riding / off-road riding as an activity during your travel BUT not if it's your main mode of transport or for touring.

It's so sad that this happened and that a fellow UK rider took out an expensive policy which didn't cover him. I just hope any other UK riders do not take out a WN policy accidentaly.

If you are from another country and WN covers you it is said to be really good as my friend busted her knee and they paid everything including surgery, knee braces etc etc. Just not for us Brits. :(
