Ushuaia Meetup - Christmas 2008

I'm reading several threads of HU members riding in South America this year. Several have stated they hope to be in Ushuaia for Christmas. This is our goal as well.

Is there any interest in planning a meetup for Ushuaia for Christmas 2008? I don't want to confuse this with a full blown Horizons Unlimited Motorcycle Travellers Meeting and this is why I'm using the term "meetup".

We'll be on the road so it will be difficult to plan activities, etc. but it would be great for like minded adventurers to meetup, share stories and have a Christmas Party together. It would also give us something to shoot for.

BTW, there is a planned HU Meeting for Viedma, Argentina sometime in December. I haven't seen the dates for this organized HU Meeting.

By way of introduction, we are a couple who will be riding 2-up on a R12GSA from Canada starting in September 2008.

ps will beer drinking be allowed??

Your Mileage May Vary 7 May 2008 22:16

Wow... this is really growing

In less than 2 days we have several different people announcing plans to be in the 'Land of Fire' at the world's southernmost city for Christmas. This is great.

PS... I read somewhere that Ushuaia has it's own micro-brewery! Yoo Hoo!

Blimey! I hope so.
I have wanted to go to Fire-Land since someone told me beer was 2p a litre in 1983.

+ 1 more 2008 Ushuaia xmas

My stink + beard is really weather dependent :Beach: . I'll be on an f650gs, solo.

mystix 16 May 2008 15:31

Two friends of mine (from France on R80GS) and my self (from Luxembourg on Yam Super-Ténéré) are planning a trip from Valpo to Ushuaia starting mid December. On xmas we are still on the way, but on New Years Eve we will be in Ushuaia.

Bah Humbug

Put me down as a 'maybe'. Should be in Viedma for the December meet, and I'll decide then. Gotta ride the Carraterra Austral before they pave it, but Christmas camping in Ushuaia's windy desolation never really appealed - especially with tropical beaches and honking cities in range.

Will be good to finally share an overseas beer, Simon...

Hope to see you around those parts. We would like to be in Viedma as well, but don't think we'll be that far south by December 6th.

Christmas in Ushuaia

Steve and I should be there from Washington (State) - following on from Viedma gathering. He's on an 1150GS and I'll be on a 650GS. Then, up the Carraterra Austral to Santiago. :thumbup1:

I'm happy to say that I have edited and updated the first post to reflect the number of people who will try to be in Ushuaia for Christmas. So far it looks like we will be a dozen or so. There should be a few stories told over turkey dinner (and local beer).

I'm adding this post to give this thread a bit of a bump.

Cheers

I'd like to highjack this thread for just a moment.... If any of you will be going from LaPaz south, there's a woman I owe 50 bolivianos in Patacamaya. (a few hours south of LaPaz, Bolivia) I can reinburse in person or pay any do-gooders with paypal. It's an easy deed, as there's only one road in the town going through... Please email me at LC at LorraineChittock.com if this appeals to your sense of Xmas cheer. ;-)

Route Trip Mexico- TDF october

Hi Robert,

I change the route, because we want to enjoy and visit more places, so we want to spend our trip for 4 months (probably a little more).
Also decided change my 1200gs for the new Gsa and the agency will give it to me the next week.
Nowadays we are working in the route to return, and we are waiting for the contact of the company in Panama to cross the moto and then, decide who is the best if plane or boat.
Anyways we will leave Cancun normally on October 11th. Inform me about your route and we will see if it’s possible to enjoy some miles together.

regards

Pas

Hi Pas

This is good news. Our plan is for us to leave Canada on Sept 19th. We may well have the opportunity to ride together.

What is your route and timeline through Central America to Panama?

Robert

I'll be leaving, (solo) from California next month, (August) heading south. Although I'll stop a lot to study spanish, want to be at the cape around christmas and will definitely need a beer, or two, or... We could have a contest and see who smells the worst, or maybe not.

Hopefully you'll have a chance to shower on the way. ;-)

Tom has already indicated the intention to be in Ushaia for Christmas. I'd like to throw in a tea party, as my ride there, will be punctuated with daily stops at 4pm to make tea for people.

I see no reason why I shouldn't make tea for everyone who is in the Ushaia at the gathering too.

I hope my tea sponsor supplies enough, or would be gracious enough to have some posted to us in Ushaia...anyone have a postal address which they could use...Post Office end of the Americas might be a little vague?

Can you get some lemons while you are there BMWRC, just in case we have Earl Grey...oooh and some biscuits, not rich tea though, they just turn into sog and end up as slop in the bottom of the cup. In fact I'll send you a shopping list.

I'll have a word with Republic of Tea- my Tea sponsors, to see what can be done.

Leaving Seattle first week in October from outside the first ever Starbucks down in Pike's Place. I like the irony of starting a tea ride from outside a coffee place, plus as a chained corporate giant, the unchained ethos of the trip is the antithesis of all Starbucks represents.

What's the unchained ethos?

Unchained Across the World | Break free from ordinary! hope you'll contribute with recommendations.

Finally, anyone got or using a satellite phone?
Which service provider do you recommend for a globalstar (I think)?

Unless distracted... me too

I'm heading south from Panama middle of September to TDF. May hit Ushuaia for Christmas, but then again I might get distracted by a beautiful beach, an Andean village, or a vineyard somewhere (or who knows what else :devil2:) and get there later

But I will get there sometime around the end of the year or early next.

Hey Steve,

I hear you... we have the same travel plans. One of our few time goals is to reach Ushuaia for Christmas... for the same reason you mention (well maybe not all the same reasons), we might be distracted.

So we'll put you down for a possible maybe.

Bike Hire

Hey all,

This sounds awesome and tempting, but no way I can get myself and the old girl (XT tenere) over there in time..... any chance of a bike loan or hire (strict budget currently in force)? from somewhere that would still ensure a sensibly timed meander down to the gathering in Ushuaia? All else failing - are we allowed to join without our trusty steeds...?

Howdy,

Saw this thread a while back, but expected we'd have been and gone from Ushuaia by Xmas, but now with the shipment of our bikes delayed, Lady Burger and I will be setting off from Santiago in late November.

I expect after experiencing a little Chilean vino and a spot Patagonian hiking that we'll hit Ushuaia pretty close to Xmas time. So would love to join if you've room for 2 more!

Hi, I was actually planning to spend Christmas on a sunny beach in a warmer part of Argentina. But since it takes DHL forever to ship a camshaft from Germany to Chile, I am delayed by a month and it looks like I might be stuck with you in Ushuaia at Christmas ;-) That is if you are having me (1 man, 1 bike)...

Christmas in Ushuaia

Hi,
we spend the last weekend in Viedma at the HU meeting and more or less everbody is heading to Ushuaia for Christmas. We were about 15-20 people and I am wondering, if we should give the Camping Rio Pipo a notice?

And by the way, the meetup is still at the Campground Rio Pipo, right .... or is there another place?

Thanks for any reply!

Ushuaia it is

We´re coming down from Chile, so missed the Viedma meetup, but it looks like lady burger and I will hit Ushuaia in perfect time for Xmas.

I have no idea where the meetup is planned for, but Campground Rio Pipo sounds fine to us. I guess if 15 - 20 or so bikers are going to turn up on their doorstep just before Xmas some warning might be appreciated.

see ya soon

Your Mileage May Vary 15 Dec 2008 02:32

We won't make it

It was our original goal to be in Ushuaia for Christmas and so I started this thread to see how many more might join us.

It's 10 days before Christmas. Tonight we are in Antogfagasta, Chile. We could push it and get be in Ushuaia in time for Christmas and then push it some more and be in Buenos Aires for "S" flight home on Dec 29. (Unfortunately she must return to the real world and get back to work.)

But we'd miss too much.

During this adventure we have met many travelers who are planning reach Ushuaia for Christmas, some are not idetified (for example Chuck, Stuart, Matt, Martin, Don...). From what I've seen, you should expect a larger number than has been mentionned here.

So here is to wishing you all a wonderful and memorable Merry Christmas gathering.

After the Dakar, I plan to get to Ushuaia before heading north.

Feliz Navidad
