Vehicle ownership when crossing boarders
I know that I will need both the bike registration and title (and copies) with me as I transit from country to country in South America. My son and I will be riding together. However, both bikes are registered and titled in my name only.
Will it present an issue at the boarders if my son's bike is in my name if I am present also? |
no and to be on the sure side you could have a poder issued by a notario allowing your son to ride your motorcycle
|
what if
this topic has been mentioned many times the only advise is to go for it and publish the out come you will never know until you do it
dont rely on previous posters experience do your research and throw the dice that's how the world works especially in developing nations you have to gamble nothing is for sure let us know how it turned out dont let this web site make your determinations |
Hello
Why don't you just transfer the papers to your son? Once you are back home, transfer it back to you. sushi |
The title of my KLR650 is in the United States. I have with my just the title of the previous owner and the USA registration in my name
I have crossed the Colombia-Ecuador border and the Ecuador-Peru border just by showing the USA registration |
Are these border crossings recent or pre-pandemic?
|
I've been riding a motorcycle, that wasn't registered on my name, for the last 4 months through Colombia, Brazil, Guyana, Suriname and French Guyana. Without problems.

what borders
Joe, taking the back roads of Northern South America is awesome
As I have been to Punta Gallinas in October last year Very few have been to this point on the Continent with a large Adventure Moto Keep her going I just wish some day I could ride Venezuela |
At the border you make a temporary import, even though is a simple form, thats what it is. The person importing the bike must be the owner or some one authorized by the owner via a power of atorney AKA Poder. In this case since you are the owner of both bikes, you should fill up the temp import papers for both bikes. Thats the right way to do it. Yet, you could find a border officer that lets your son fill the import papers even when he is not the owner. In any case you will be fine.
