Reach out to "SS in Vzla." on AdvRider.com. He might or might not be in VZ at the moment, but will probably know the skinny on the border situation.
SS in Vzla. | Adventure Rider The political situation is up and down in Venezuela, as you likely know. The borders open and close randomly. The economic situation is a mess. Take a chuck on cash and trade privately. The best bet is to bring USD, then Euros, but frankly greenbacks are damn near universally excepted for easy exchange.) In 2012, when crossing from Colombia near Maracaibo, a cambo guy offered me so much more than the official rate, than I thought I was making a mistake calculating the conversion. That was before I understood the private market will easily offer 1/3 more than the official exchange rate. You might be able to exchange USD for bolivars with a hotel owner or manager, as we did in Maracaibo. I visited a friend in Caracas who had an account with my US bank. I transferred funds into his account, then he gave me bolivars at the private rate. I did this in Argentina as well, which has the same screwed up economy. TIP: spend the bulk of the local currency before leaving VN or AR. You'll get awful rate when exchanging after you have left these countries. |
