Will be arriving in Santiago 25 January, and after three bikes suitable for cross-continent driving, with papers. Saddle bags a bonus.

Try RideChile, Ride-Chile.com | Home ,reasonable (IMO) hire rates.

If you want to buy, head down Lima/10 Julio in Santiago

They do sometimes sell on their used bikes. But there is fun to be had in the Santiago bike shops.

Try and find a mechanic first, and he should be able to help you buy and sort out the bike.

Unless you want to buy new, then head up to Av Vitacura (Las Condes). The main Japanese dealers are there and usually help with the RUT as well.

Thanks for the helpful info Bruce. Will look into all this when we get boots on the ground.

Need to be careful, recently Chile has not been allowing foreigners to leave Chile with Chilean plated bikes or cars and foreign passports.
Even if you get a RUT which you will have to, to buy a bike in Chile that is not enough to leave the country with the bike on a tourist stamp in your NON Chilean passport.

Need to look into that before you arrive.
