What is the process for buying a bike in Peru from another traveller?
Hi, does anyone know what the process is for buying a bike in Peru from another traveller (on a temporary import certificate)? Is it as simple as going to a notoria to exchange ownership as I've heard is the case in some other South American countries? Or does the seller need to obtain a Special Permit to Sign Documents from the DIGEMIN office as I've heard is the case if a foreigner is selling a bike to a Peruvian? Is aduana involved? Any other details?

Anybody able to help with this question? Thanks.

In most countries foreigner to foreigner sales of foreign vehicles is illegal so the process involves borrowing the vehicle using a PODER to allow the new "owner" to drive the vehicle legally out of the country and hand in the previous owners TIP as they leave. In the meantime the legal transfer of ownership back in the country of registration is completed and plates and documents sent and that allows the new ownere to enter the next country with full ownership. Obviously timing is critical, insurance can be very problematic AND it may be impossible to change the registration back home anyway (not least because that registration may no longer be valid). Some elect to drive on a poder indefinitely but Peru doesn't always cooperate and of course it is difficult to sell a vehicle you don't legally own.
Lots of combinations so hard to give a 123 set of instructions. Photoshop is also an option used by many but of course then any insurance they obtain is null and void but that doesn't seem to worry some. |
Hey there - thanks for this response. Hmm...wondering how others apparently manage it easily enough.
A quick question also: what's a PODER? Sent from my GT-I9500 using Tapatalk |
