Australians Looking for Medical and Evac Insurance

Hi Everyone,

I have spent a bit of time reviewing past threads and it appears as though there is no one stand out company for medical/ Evac insurance and I understand allot depends on your country of origin and where your travelling to, i.e. if based in the US due to medical costs then premiums will be higher than say Aust.

We intend on leaving in April 2017 for a couple of years starting in SA and just seeing where the road takes us. Does anyone have any suggestions on companies they have used or received quotes from.

As an example World N, if we want to camp anywhere between 2000 and 6000 mtrs will add a premium on of 2,406 (total now 4,800 Aust)..... a year (2 people)..... ridiculous

I dont believe there are many options available to us in Aust any advice would be appreciated

I'd just use spot or the delorme tracker.

SPOT SATELLITE MESSENGER :: HOME PAGE

Spot comes with air evac and repatriation insurance. And it's like $300/yr, plus you get to use the spot to track your location via satellite -- don't forget, it also sends rescue at the touch of a button. Better than just having the insurance.

Can't help on the medical insurance :)

Delorme

Ahhh yes forgot about that, we have the Delorme and I also have another personal EPIRB.

I'll need to contact Delorme to find out if they offer anything. My thinking is that at least they would rescue, but if we then need to come back home how would this be done.

We also need to keep in mind that we currently both pay around $2500 each per year for basic Australian Health insurance which will stop once we leave, so we shouldnt complain to much about the prices being charged..... we need to keep it in perspective.

So the two main companies Ive been looking at are WN and Global Rescue..... I'll continue to work through it all and let people know how we go

Delorme have a option for evac insurance less than $20 a year but I think it would be a mistake to rely on it too heavily as it is hardly proper travel insurance.

Big advantage with world nomads (ageist $%^$%^&s that they are) is you can renew and start on the road which is not the case for the majority.

Big advantage of being Australian is getting dumped back home by the travel insurer is no big deal given our universal health care system.

If you are riding motorbikes, double check exclusions. World nomads does cover australians on bikes but not many other nationalities
