Bad Guts? Miracle Berber cure...
Yes
It happened to me in Fez and after 3 days in bed and running to the bog i advised to take Oregano tea the next day i was out of bed and shit started to solidify overnight!!!! Take a large fingertip pinch full of oregano put into small tea pot cover with boiling water youll need plenty sugar to make it drinkable and hey presto down it get to bed and sleep. It makes you feel a bit high and damn disorientated but it works. |
oopsie poopsie !
Glad that you got your guts settled down Dan. However spending three days in bed feeling crappy ;) does not look like fun ,nor do the disorienting effects of the described oregano therapy. I will stick with the DUKORAL vaccine taken before starting out on a trip. I have been using that for several years now and since doing so have never experienced travellers' diarhea. I think it is well worth the cost and it sure is more comfortable than running to the thundermug in a panic.

Bisto
Try taking 2 tablespoons of Bisto, it does not cure the 'problem' but thickens it up a bit..............AAAAAAAAAAH BISTO !!:oops2:

Surfing found some references to Oregano Oil "increasing the body’s resistance to many bacterial, fungal and viral diseases due to its ability to inhibit or kill a wide variety of toxic bacteria, fungi, yeasts and viruses."
Apparently it can also be used for intestinal parasites, to treat acne, athlete's foot and thrush... |
I just wonder: Should it be fresh oregano, or is dried oregano ok?
|
Dried
the berbers say dried so dried it must be

Might be useful to seal a leaking radiator - as does pepper ;-)

Yes
I can't say I have tried it, but I stayed with some Berbers just below Ouzazarte (I think that is the correct English spelling, but I wouldn't want to bet too much on it) and they prescribed the same cure to a friend of mine.
I have iron guts, and have never had any problems anywhere, but her stomach is weaker than a wet Kit Kat, and it seemed to work for her. Happy Riding. |
DUKORAL vaccine - Is that for Cholera?
Surely it doesnt combat standard travellers tum? |
Bad guts/ runs/ Delhi belli call it what you will.....
'Immodium' capsules are a godsend! STOPS the runs DEAD!:thumbup1:
To combat the Dehydration either 'Diaoralyte' or similar or make your own with 1 Litre of Tepid water, 1 Tablespoon of Sugar and a pinch (largish) of Table Salt, stir together and drink freely. Keep drinking LOTS of this as Dehydration can cause nasty health problems, and then you will be in loads trouble, especially in a hot country. |
I would only recomend immodium as an absolute last resort! When i was in Cusco, i was horribly ill for three days, couldn't leave the hotel room. I saw a doctor and he gave me immodium, i didn't take a shit for three more days and then suffered extreme constipation from only one pill...that was worse! I've taken the Dukoral, it worked for me, but i think my guts have finally gotten used to the Americas. I haven't bought a bottle of water in two months! Mexico city is the exception though! Never drink the tap-water here! After my Cusco experience, i'll try anything before i take immodium again.

On my trip last year I managed to pick something up and dribbled my DNA round half of Morocco - that was despite 2 maybe 3 loperamide (Immodium by any other name) capsules every day. My poop was soup for about 2 weeks AFTER I got home ...
That's probably more than enough information for now lol... G |
So many 'cures'
Garlic!! eat lots, kills bugs, some of it sweats through your pores and mozzies hate that!.
Oregano? well I have some to cook with - delicious (can't say I've tried it with tea but any kind of 'mind-bending' :eek3:stuff isn't wise when you are travelling IMHO.:nono: (or any other time !) as it will leave you vulnerable and that isn't smart. |
