Medical Transport Insurance

I’ve heard about the services where you pay a few hundred bucks for an insurance plan, and then, if you need medical transport out of a foreign country back to the US, they will take care of that. I’m considering getting something like that for an upcoming ride to El Salvador and back.

Anybody have any particular companies or plans to recommend?

I’ve looked at Global Rescue and World Nomads. I also tried Skymed, but they don’t cover Central America. I plan to talk to Ripcord Rescue, but they are closed for the day.

Of the two I talked to, I preferred the feel of Global Rescue. I was hoping to find something that would transport you back to the US if you were hurt and just preferred to get care in the US versus wherever you were. With both of these at least, it sounds like for the most part they will only transport you if you need care that can’t be provided where you are. And maybe that’s how they all are. Anybody know any different?

Ripcord is pretty specifically medevac. World Nomads caters to Aussie riders and (I believe) limits everybody else to 125cc, so read the small print carefully.

You'll want a policy that covers medical expenses in country, not only repatriation, since if you need it you'll get treatment locally before being declared fit to fly. Most policies will cover it in one way or another.
