Good evening ladies and gents

Absolute myriad of info out there and now my head is dead.

Does anyone by chance has the definitive list or link to such info that can be held as reliable?

We have had so much conflicting advice it starts to make you question things, we would love to have protection for everything just in case however we will need a mortgage.

Any good advice from those in the know to point us in the right direction would be welcomed.

Recommended shots for Alaska: "Hyderized", Glacier Inn, Hyder, Alaska.

Recommended shots for Canada: "Sourtoe Cocktail", Downtown Hotel, Dawson City, Yukon.

All other countries: Destinations - Travelers' Health - CDC. The World Health Organization website is also a good resource.

I don't need the CDC to tell me that almost all the shots needed for the Americas are shots you should be getting as a matter of course even if you never leave New Zealand. Measles, mumps, chicken pox, tetanus, diptheria, pertussis, polio, smallpox, the two hepatitis variants..... The few you might want to add are typhoid and yellow fever, with rabies an outside possibility if you're trying to be thorough and can get someone else to pay for it.

If you're finding yourself lacking anything on the first list, you've been negligent. The first three, of course, are age-dependent; if you're in your mid-fifties you may have had all of these, as I did.

WHO (World Health Organization) is another reliable, non-hysterical source of information. Google it.

Good info and yeap basically covered already for your first list and agree anything less would enter you into the Darwin category, just trying to get more of the oddities covered being an unknown at this point.

We asked a doctor and she painted a very glum picture and I think was trying to turn it into a cash cow, we want to be covered but not for stuff that is very very unlikely or not at all and I suspect we were being taken for a ride with the doctors warnings/advice/etc.

What did they suggest? I'm a big fan of the yearly flu vaccines, but they're not specific to travelers. There's a pneumonia vaccine which you could make a case for if determined, a marginal cholera vaccine available in Europe but not the USA, some inapplicable encephalitis and meningitis vaccines....what else?

To be honest she rattled off a list as long as a toilet roll pretty quickly, again we have to be honest and say most of the stuff neither my wife or I had heard of other than a few familiar ones.

We asked for a confirmed list, she said she would do that and get back to us via email, that was 2 requests ago and there seems to be some funny shit going on thus we have lost confidence in her.

I guess we are trying to find out what we NEED preferably from someone who is not selling it to us...that would be ideal anyway.

We know we have to have yellow fever card but unsure of the rest that are directly applicable to us doing the Americas top to bottom.

Don't know if that's what you had in mind, exactly.

The WHO and CDC sites are pretty good, IMHO. At least, you'll get better advice there than you will, as a general rule, here. There is a FAQ on the Lonely Planet Thorntree health branch; asking on the forum itself yields the usual contradictory mix of good and bad information, but the FAQ are organized by a reliable source named nutraxfornerves. I'd trust what she says over ten random motorcyclists or Lonely Planet backpackers.
