2 bikes rental bamako mali july august 2010 : any ideas ?
hello all,
we are 2 and we ll arrive in bamako on july 20th and fly out from bamako on august 17th (a bit less than one month). we plan to make a loop : bamako - tombouctou - dogon country - bamako. if we can, a bigger loop which will include ouagadougou in burkinna fasso. i wonder if there could be problems at the borders mai - burkina fasso with 2 bikes that we rent (the papers won t be at our names) ??? So, we d like to rent 2 bikes ideally in bamako for a month. any ideas ? any recommendations travelling by bike there ? which bikes can we rent, which price ? honda xr 250 would be ideal, are we dreaming or possible ? do you know any people who could help us or rent us 2 bikes ? cheers all, happy travels |
You are going to die of hot!! Anyway, I have a BMW R100 G/S kept in Segu. I prefer to sell it (really cheap), but I am open to talk about other options. How about riding it back to Europe for free?
I know you need two bikes, but I think there are not good ones to rent, nevertheless you may buy a chinese mopped and ride till it dies; then, buy another one. Keep hydrated, Mali is the Hell. See here the bike: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Gsn_5UkhGn.../baobab++2.jpg |
Hi Vincent, I was in Bamako a couple of months ago and remember seeing a sign for bikes for rent in a little restaurant called Cafe Restaurant la Casa. I didn't see the bikes but was talking to the girl running the place and as far as I remember they were decent Yamahas. The place is run by a French girl and her boyfriend (didn't meet him) but she was very sound and on the level so it's worth a shot. If you google them you should be able to find a phone number or email, if not they are straight across from the Mission Catholique (phone 20227761) which is a nice place to stay and should be able to get their contact details for you.
edit: just found their website and contact details. Cafe-restaurant La Casa - Bamako Café Restaurant La Casa Rue 361, porte 238 Bamako Cour BPE 2914, Bamako Mali Call : 624.43 50 / 223.44.61 email: lacasabamako@free.fr |
thanx a lot for your replies
we ll try our luck through guesthouses, restaurants as you mentioned does anyone have any ideas about what we can get and which price ? is there a kind of bike district with garages in bamako ? cheers happy trails |
Did you find bikes ?
Hi just interested to know if you managed to find bikes to hire - am considering Africa in January next year and don't have the time off (or the weather) to ride all the way down. Would be good to know costs - quality of bikes etc.
Thanks Chizz |
Bikes in Mali
everyone in Mali rides the same Bike it is called a 'Jakarta' (Power K) and it is Chinese confusingly. They are easy to find in Bamako and cost around 700€ I think. I have to say that the bike is not your problem, riding to the Sahara in the middle of summer is semi-suicidal but if you want to be in 40-50 degrees... enjoy! :palm:

I bought a "Power-K" (Jakarta?) in Bamako in February for my pal who rode it to Nouakchott. Cost 230K CFA iirc. A much better looking 250 cost 350K CFA.
Those PowerK are all over Mali now. In Bamako you can see whole families riding on them. I also heard that 15 people were killed everyday in Bamako traffic, so watch out. Riding in July sounds like a kamikaze mission! |
