African fuel price database - please contribute
I know there are lists elsewhere on the web but let's start and maintain an African fuel price database (and Latin America and Asia come to that). Here would be a good place as any so I'll start by throwing in the Saharan country prices which I keep track of regularly on: http://www.sahara-overland.com/country
Should we get a full set of the 30-odd regularly visited African countries in a few weeks/months I (or maybe the sub-Saharan moderator) will make an A-Z country summary here with a date. My 'cheap' etc comments are in relation to 'high' UK prices (nearly £1/litre petrol & diesel). Giving them in euros or $ may get out of date. Chris S Algeria - cheap?Petrol (essence) 21.2 d/litre; Super 30 d/litre(where available; unleaded available in the north); diesel 13.7 d/litre. Chad - high?In N'Djamena: diesel 600 CFA/L, petrol 650. At least 10% more in the countryside. Egypt - cheap?90 octane 1 LE, but intentionally made horrible to sell the newly introduced 92 octane.?92 octane 1.4 LE?Diesel 0.6 L.E. Libya - cheap?2 star petrol 0.12LD/litre; Super 0.16D/litre. Diesel 0.15LD/litre. That and Egypt are about as cheap as it gets in the Sahara. Mali - high?Petrol and diesel from around 500- CFA/litre - more in remote towns. Mauritania - moderate In Atar Petrol about 308 UM/litre; diesel 235 UM/litre. 10% more in Chinguetti and a bit more again in Oudane. A few oogs less in NKT and NDB. Morocco and Western Sahara - moderate and cheap?7.4 dh diesel, about 14.5 dh petrol. Western Sahara prices: diesel = 4.43dh in Layounne, petrol less than 10dh. In the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilia the price is now about the same as northern Morocco and not much less than mainland Spain ~ €0.90 Niger - high?Diesel 530 CFA/litre in Agadez or 350 in Dirkou for 200L Tunisia - moderate?Unleaded petrol about 1.1 TD/litre; diesel 0.74 TD. |

Hey Chris, Thats a brilliant idea, will be very helpful to all! One suggestion: Fuel prices in Africa are directly related to the US dollar price so prices given in US$ will remain valid for longer... Zimbabwe being an extreme example.., but my experience is that over the past 4 years prices in general have remained much closer to their dollar conversion than to their local currency prices. Euros would also work. Prices as in May 2007: South Africa SA Rand 7.00 (US1) Zimbabwe Zim $ 50 000.00 (US1) Mozambique Met 30.00 (US1.2) Malawi M Kwacha 160.00 (US 1.1) Tanzania T Shilling 1150.00 (US .95) As an example: In 2005 I paid 50 Malawi Kwacha for a litre of petrol (now its 160), but in 2004 MK50 was about $1 so the $ price really does not change much.... My prices for further up until Egypt are a bit out of date, but I can look em up for you if you want... |
Zimbabwe -- about USD 1 per liter at the equivalent rate (now about Zim$ 600,000)
Usually you will have to get fuel on the black market, there is plenty about in Harare, however, for other areas I'm not at all sure. I hear fuel is very difficult to come by in most parts of the country. I've been stuck before in places where there is just nothing available, black market or not. The price can vary quite wildly -- at the end of September it was about 2 USD$ per liter. In general I assume that it will be about 1 USD per liter where ever I go. I hope this helps. |
Morocco
We've just been through Morocco and Western Sahara. Unleaded was around 10.2Dh per litre in Morocco and 6.2Dh in Western Sahara.
In Mauritania we paid 500UM/litre for some petrol in a 10 litre can, but we were desperate and I think he knew it (we have see-through tanks!). We haven't visited a proper station yet for the pump price in Nouakchott, check back in a few days. |
Nouakchott
Petrol is around 275UM/litre, diesel around 235UM at the Star stations in Nouakchott.

I will get the diesel price today. But our prices are going up YET again. 34 cents a liter on Dec 1....:censored:

Petrol, diesel is a bit more expensive, but not much.
Cape Town unleaded = R6.70 / liter diesel = R6.85 R13.90 = £1.00 roughly 60 pence per liter. Cash only, you can't buy fuel with credit cards. Almost 95% of the time you will get served. The guy filling you tank will wash your windscreen, and expect a tip of about R5.00 November 2007 |
Credit cards
We can use credit cards in RSA. they just charge you 5% of the sale extra. Not sure about foreign cards though.

a few more prices
So i've kept a note of all the fuel i've purchased from Moroccc to Cameroon, all prices in local currency. This is over the last three months, this is generally the petrol pump price although I've paid up to 30% more when buying out of glass bottles or jerries by the side of the road.

Fuel in the Gambia
Fuel has gone up here exponentially:
I arrived in Feb 2003 fuel was 19 dalasi to the liter. The dollar was 30 dalasi. Now the dollar is 23 dalasi, and fuel is 30 dalasi to the liter. SO around $1.15 a liter for super gas, maybe 80 octane, maybe. It is getting expensive. Diesel is 32 dalasi a liter. It used to be cheaper. It isn't anymore. |

Senegal Fuel Price
Hi all,
Yesterday, here in St Louis (Senegal) I filled up at 717CFA a litre but I noticed at a marine gas pump by the river fuel was 565 a litre. Not sure if it's specific for 2 stroke outboards or quite how I'd get the bike up to the pump though! H |
Alternative fuels for when the fossil stuff gets too expensive!
Whilst it's not exactly on topic...
Remember, if you are driving a diesel then you can always fall back on using vegetable oil - it may well be cheaper and more available the way fossil fuel is going! It's something which might get you moving if there are real fuel shortages somewhere... If you have a relatively big engined car - Land Rover, Land Cruiser etc, then running a 50% vegetable oil(ordinary cooking oil) mix will probably cause no problems - I've run a TDi Defender for the last few years on 50% with no problems except a bit of waxing on the fuel filter in freezing European weather - just carry a spare filter element! Sunflower oil is best since it's thinner, but basically whatever you can get. A modern electronic management engine might not like it due to odd feedback readings, but since a 'proper' overland car shouldn't have a reliance on something which needs a diagnostic computer to maintain it most of us shouldn't have to worry about that... And if you have a Landy with a TD5 engine it's designed to run on kerosine or Jet A1 without any additives - that's what they tested the original designs on, so that's another alternative fuel - Jet A1 tends to be cheap (untaxed) but usually has to be bought in 210 litre drums - ask at the local airport! Other diesels, add a bit of oil to the tank to lubricate the injector pump Tony |

Fuel prices and Road conditions are what we need to know!
I've been planning a trip in southern africa and those are the facts that I have been hunting for. The other info in need is how avaliable is the fuel between locations. Will my tank make it? Will be bouncing about southern africa so can supply info, but what we need is a data base of fuel prices/avalability and road conditions globally that this can get fed into and made avaliable in a user frendly format, currancy linked ect. |
As XT Girl has found, GTZ have a more or less annual world-wide fuel price survey. Here is their website section on fuel prices:
GTZ. International fuel prices Their latest survey is from November 2008. Here is the overview of the report: http://www.gtz.de/de/dokumente/en-in...eview-2009.pdf And, Chris, as you may have seen, there is some interesting info on the UNEP.ORG website. Here is the Africa section: http://www.unep.org/pcfv/regions/Africa.asp And the most interesting tables are the matrix indicating the status of leaded gasoline by country (sub-sahara) - all phased out. http://www.unep.org/pcfv/PDF/MatrixAfricaLead-Oct09.pdf And also the Diesel Sulphur Map (sub-sahara) http://www.unep.org/pcfv/PDF/MapSSAf...phur-Oct09.pdf The question I have is: what is the octane level of the unleaded in Mali? Does anyone have an accurate source? TOTAL have many country specific websites: http://www.total.com/en/common/group_websites/ For example: Burkina Faso TOTAL Burkina Faso : une gamme de produits pétroliers et lubrifiants where it is indicated the unleaded is 91 octane. But no TOTAL Mali website. :confused1: |
Yeti, road conditions is another thread altogether. Best to ask specifically in each regional section, but in sub-Saharan Africa for example would depend on the season in many places. Have a look at Tracks4Africa.
ORC, I suspect the octane is the same in Mali (and Niger) as it is in Burkina as all those countries are in thrall of Total's near-European prices. Interesting to hear that UNL is all phased out in Africa of all places. I had a long 'r u sure' debate with the bloke who found that info on XT Forum. There is hope for us all. Thanks for the links and all the rest for chipping in too. Bernd S - very nicely formatted! For recent prices on the areas I know (Sahara and North Africa), go to the map here and click a country. The days of cheap fuel in Nigeria are coming to a close.
