Antennas / aerials and crossing borders.

Does anyone have any experience or advice regarding vehicle mounted antennas in Africa.

We have a UHF and mobile phone antenna at present and want to avoid any unnecessary grief on the borders of the east Africa (Durban to Cairo).

I seem to remember CB radios being hidden/confiscated on the Moroccan border.

thanks

We've driven up from Sierra Leone to Europe with a 10' whip and a 2m antenna on the bull bar of our Land Cruiser last year. This was all for our on board ham radio.

We passed through Sierra Leone, Guinea, Senegal, The Gambia, Mauritania and Morocco before crossing into Spain, all with no issues or even questions.

That's good to hear, I may well be travelling some of the countries you list with 2m/70cm antenna on bike. The only questions I've had myself, ( so far) is at fuel stops, they all ask "imusic?" pointing at my helmet in the ear area. :innocent:

womble > I think a lot depends on if you have " legit " equipment on board. If you have licensed equipment valid in the country you are in there should be no issues. If it is something else :oops2: there is surely a risk of confiscation. However I think most boarder chaps won't even notice as long as its not too "different" from normal broadcast antenna. Be friendly, smile a lot, shake hands a lot and flutter your eyelids if you feel it will help.

If you are a licensed ham usefull info can be found here> Reference

I was thinking I'd remove both, but sounds like i will be ok with the mobile phone antenna. As long as i can prove that's what it is of course!

Thanks for your help.
