avoid egypt. saudi to sudan.
in order to miss out the inherantly beaurocratic and expensive egyptian leg of any london to cape town hourney, does anyone know what the practicality is with getting into saudi and a subsequent ferry across to sudan. apparently jeddah to saukin is one route. can you get a transit visa for saudi in jordan? is there ferry availability from jeddah? has it been done before? any helo much appreciated.

Travelled with people who went up the other way - ie left Sudan - Suakin - Jeddah, 3 day transit visa to Jordan - Syria - etc. Don't know how easy it is to do it in return. Should be possible. The other constraint may be the current political climate, the recent attacks on westeners working in the oil industry. Whilst I doubt you would have any problems transiting down the west coast but it may affect whether the Saudi's will give you the visa.
