Insurances are different, but you can buy both in Nouadhibou.

For Mali, be sure to ask for CFA Country area Insurance.
They will provide for how many days you need... generally steps of 15 or 30days or more.

Regarding border crossing, depending from you.
Normally by Ayoun el Atrouss and Nioro du Sahel... now tamrac until Bamako
Other places will be crossed, as that from Kiffa going south to Kayes (Bilikouate gate if I remember well) more sand and deep tracks in the first half...

Cheers

We crossed the border on the Kiffa-Kayes route last year and really enjoyed the trip. It's a bit sandy, and the tracks can be a bit confusing near villages but there are plenty of people to ask for directions if necessary. Also no problem to find a quiet place to camp.

In Kayes we reported to the police to get stamped in. The police also arranged for an insurance agent (Noor Assur company) to come in - after some negotiation it was CFA26000 for a month, which was much less than we had been quoted in Nouakchott. We did not bother getting a lassiz passez from Customs, and had no problems at checkpoints until several weeks later in Timbuktu, where they insisted we buy one.
