buying motorcycle in Africa and Carnet de Passage

If I buy a small bike (100 to 250cc) somewhere in North Africa, can I then travel through Africa without Carnet de Passage?
What is the most popular bike in Africa?
Also what would be the best country to buy a bike? I would be flying from Europe so any northern country would be better.

You would have to get a Temporary Import Permit in each country. More of a hassle. Check out this guide for more info regarding going without a carnet.

This shouldn't be a problem, particularly if you buy in an ECOWAS country, so start your trip in Senegal/Gambia for instance with a bike registered there. There won't be any problem if your bike is registered there and has ECOWAS (brown card) insurance

I drove down in a van without a carnet from the Netherlands to Cote d'Ivoire, it wasn't a problem at all apart from my tantrum at Diama with customs (that's another story!)
