Cost of importing ZA bike to Kenya?
I am thinking of buying a second hand in South Africa and bringing it into Kenya. Not sure what I should expect for import duty here in Kenya or what the taxation valuation will be based on. Does anyone have any idea/advice on the best/cheapest way to do this?
Much appreciated! |
Ask a car dealer who imports vehicles from ZA...
My wild guess would be, for comesa trade: 10% import duty, plus VAT, plus plus ... Valuation, if the vehicle is not on their lists - which is probably the case if you didn't find one like it within Kenya- they'll estimate. That's thus negotiable. |
Thanks for the advice-sounds like it could be a reasonable venture.

George:
The import duty on cars into Kenya is 60%. I don't know what it would be for a moto. |
paneuropean,
Kenya ought to be less tough on vehicles from SA, due to comesa agreements. If not, 60% total taxes on estimated value is correct for EA. |
Do you really need to permanently import it?
|
Maybe not, but I am living half time in Kenya and thought it may be less hastle then keeping it on a Carnet. Are temporary imports possible in Kenya? Advise would be greatly appreciated.

You can't, legally, import a vehicle over 10 years old into Kenya - that's why, although temp. resident, my '94 4Runner is still on a carnet. Now I don't know if this applies to motorbikes as well, but your best bet is to contact the Kenya AA:
Monica Wahome - Carnet Department AA - Nairobi - 020 825060/6 I do know of people who have circumvented the carnet requirement by re-registering their vehicle with a more recent date of manufacture but that route is fraught with perils and I don't know if it's even necessary with a bike. Best person to contact is: Gilbert Odhiambo - Snr Revenue Officer - Nairobi - 020 310900 x2025 He is EXCELLENT! Genuine and incorrupt - a true gent. |
Thanks for the advice and contacts. Apparently Kenya is no longer allowing foreign registered vehicles to get local carnet. They want you to have a carnet at the point of origin.

I renewed my carnet (for a Zim registered vehicle) in March this year but my wife is working here and the vehicle is in her name.
