Cost of Africa per country
I have put together somewhat of a spreadsheet for the budget minded overlanders on typical pricing of what to expect in each country. They may not be accurate, as they have all been pulled from a user contributed database. However the database does claim to have current and timely information. They are statistical averages for each country as a whole - prices may vary throughout the country but this is based on averages. I also left out some countries that are not typically crossed by overlanders.
Please, if you notice anything that looks odd or way off the mark, let me know. I took the most logical costs such as meals at an inexpensive restaurant, a meal for 2 at a moderate restaurant, carton of 12 eggs (for camping cooking?), price of a 0.5L local draught beėr, gasoline per litre, and unfortunately I couldn't get a price of hostel/cheap hotel accommodation, but I threw in cost of renting a house in the city centre to give an idea of city expense. Please keep in mind, I don't know how accurate the gasoline prices are on this website (Numbeo.com), so I also took prices from a secondary website which I will post at the bottom. Meal #2 is the 2 person meal at moderate restaurant. On checking with several European countries, most of the living costs were fairly similar. I don't expect it to be dead on accurate, but more or less a "Ball park" estimate. I do this as I have no idea of the costs, and being on a tight budget I am trying to figure the places I can spend a longer duration, and the places I probably can't afford to. Of course, cost is not the only factor of time spent in a country, however it is all part of preparation, and to not be totally shocked on arrival.... much like how I was with Israel (what a rip-off) If you have any more accurate estimates or averages, please comment below so I can update the list. Please share your information! |
I think in most places you need to look at the major economic city and elsewhere.
The prices for Ghana & Cote d'Ivoire are inflated in comparison to what is happening today (left just over a week ago, go every 3 months or so), even for Abidjan which is pricey (except housing). It's a difficult task and for overlanders as it's even more difficult to calculate. For example in CI I'd take that price and knock 25%+ off which could easily be saved even if you're in Abidjan most of the time (except housing but this can be made cheaper), fuel last week for petrol was 570CFA. Your prices for other parts of W.Africa are inflated too The great thing is the ECOWAS countries with the exception of Ghana are in the CFA zone so it's all pegged to the euro at 655CFA |

"It is a bit disappointing to have such conflicting information in the gas prices, in brings into question the accuracy of everything else." Hope that it helps your calculations. I can confirm that the price for gas (petrol) in South Africa is currently : R12.26 (0.70 euro). However is can and does fluctuate base on rand/dollar exchange rate amongst other factors. Highest was about 0.89 euro some time back. The price is regulated/fixed for all petrol stations. Divided into either coastal or inland. The price is only a few cents apart and does not vary much. Eggs price seems correct, a little on the high side. But obviously it matters where you shop. Small lunch type meal can be had at fast food chains for about 2.28 euro (KFC .... ) per person. 2 People can eat well for 23 euro at a moderate restaurant. Beer sounds correct - but depends on the bar and brand you drink. Could be higher if you drink craft beers at upmarket bar/pub. beer Rent pm sounds accurate, again all depends on where. Cheapest rent in Cape Town in a fair area is about 228 euro. In suburbs - about 10 - 20 km from city center. |
Thanks!
This is great! I wished there was a sticky for such information in each regional section much the same way there is a shipping data base - to keep it constant. I'll be sure to post similar information while on the road.
Here is a link which takes you to current fuel prices most places in the world. It is updated regularly. Gasoline prices around the world, 20-Feb-2017 | GlobalPetrolPrices.com Cheers! |
Well prices in Africa can change very quickly. Way more importend then prices for alcohol https://www.alcoholrescue.co.uk/excessive-drinking.html are the prices for Visa, Customs and exit fees.
Visa, Arabic Numberplates und taxes just for Egype were more then 300 Euro. Sudan was very expensive as well and charged 50 Dollars just for registering at the police station! Adventure experience - motorcycle trip riding across Africa |
Budget travel.
You don't eat at a restaurant every day when your at home, do you? If you do .. then stop and save that money by making your own lunch and diner at home - you can take a pre-made lunch to work. Do something similar on your trip, lunch can come from a super market as can breakfast. And you don't need a hot meal every night. Beer? A luxury item ... cut it down. Fuel and tyres can be stretched by slowing down. 80 kmh is a good maximum speed. :scooter: Nothing you can do about the prices of visas etc... |
Shure at the real wild places there are no hotels or restaurants anyway. Here a brand new documentation that showes how bad alcoholis (german): https://www.zdf.de/dokumentation/zdf...ausch-100.html
