costs/time to get South African carnet
Does anyone know how much it costs to get a carnet through the South African automobile association (or whatever they call it), and how long the process takes? By cost I mean just the paperwork fees... not the deposit for the bike. Thanks.

Think the 'fees' would be on par with doing the same in Mexico.. You could try emailing them ... they have a web site somewheres... |
that's right, I'm referring to getting a carnet for a South African bike for travel to other African countries.

Hi Sohrakoff,
if I rember right, the carnet is 1600 ZAR (7,15 ZAR = 1 USD) But you also must deposit the value of the bike. Off course you should name it on a low value. If the value is named with 10000 ZAR you have to pay a 10000 ZAR deposit. But I would not take a carnet for a south african bike. You dont need one up to Zamiba and Mozamibque. And for Tanzania and Kenya I would take a chance. The South African automobile association is called AA. I can organize you contact details if need some. regards Thomas |
Above Kenya
I know this thread is for sub saharan. But I am looking at buying a motorbike in South Africa to Travel all the way to London. Is a SA carnet reccomended in this situation. We haven't decided on an east or west route yet. I hear that Egypt is very strict.
