Daily Cost of Living ?
Hi All,
At the end of this October I am planning to set of from West Mali on my big trip across teh continent. I am travelling on a Yamaha Tenere and will do bushcamping, cheap local hotels and the occasional sleep in a nice hotel when I get to a capital city. My route will be Mali - Guinea - Ivory Coast - Ghana - Benin - Togo (or the other way) - Niger - Chad etc. heading east and then down. I was figuring on about 50 US$ per day (incl. petrol), but that seemed a bit heavy ? Any experiences will be appreciated. hed |
In my experience, I reckon you've over estimated (which is no bad thing). I estimated that you could get by in Africa on 100GBP/week for food/accomm/fuel if you were careful (but not including visas, servicing etc.). This included a mixture of camping and staying in the cheap hotels (the 5US/night variety). Obviously it all depends on what you consider an acceptable standard of comfort.

Hi Ian,
Txs for the reply. I was wondering, on a trans continental trip like this, how much of your money did u take with you and how much did u have sent to you later on. Is it easy to get money sent via western union or so ? txs. hed |
I didn't do a full trans-Africa trip, only UK to The Gambia.
For what to take, perhaps this might help: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000580.html I took half in cash and used a Visa card for most of the rest. Even with no ATM (which do exist in some cities), I found you could use a Visa card in banks to get cash over the counter with your passport as proof of ID. I found it very difficult to cash traveller's cheques in Morocco (even in Rabat) but didn't try elsewhere. [This message has been edited by Ian (edited 13 September 2002).] |
