Danakil and Turkana
Hi!
Does anyone have updated information about the situation in the Danakil desert and border crossings across Ethiopia - Kenya on the Turkana? Thank you very much! |
I don't think anything has changed recently. My information is from the beginning of the year.
The border crossing Ethiopia - Kenya at Turkana is easy. Be stamped out of Ethiopia (customs, immigration) in Omorate, and go wherever you like from there (West or East coast of the lake). Register with the first police post you come across in Kenya (eg Iliret) and then complete immigration and customs formalities in Nairobi. While paperwork is easy, the thing to spend some thought on is logistics for fuel and water, and mechanical/medical self-sufficiency. More info here http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ethiopia-73346 The west coast of the lake is said to be easier, some info here http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ide-lake-71586 As far as Danakil is concerned, my latest info is that travelling there with your own vehicle is prohibitively expensive. That's not to say it can't be done, but most will find it significantly more economical to join a regular tour. |
Hi Sirakor!
Thank you for your information. I already saw those posts, but was just if was something new... :-) Just one question, that i canñt find.. Does anybody knows where are the immigration and customs formalities offices in Nairobi? Thank you!!! |
There's a thread somewhere on the HUBB which gives the exact coordinates and directions to the particular office. Search function should find it.
I'm replying on the off chance that you do not wish to visit Nairobi. It is possible to get stamped into and out of Kenya at the Ugandan border if you ask nicely. I came through Moyale but returned to Turkana to meet friends coming through that way. We didn't visit Nairobi and he was able to explain his situation at the Ugandan border when we all crossed together. His entry stamp was backdated to the same day as his Ethiopian exit stamp with no problem. Kenyan police may try and hit you up for the road tax you haven't paid but this is the case anyway if you are going to Nairobi without it displayed anyway. |
